JBL PRX 7 series?

I talked to the JBL tech guy yesterday. He says the SRX818sp is gonna be a pretty decent upgrade from the 718XLF judging by the parts. Personally here are my PROs

1) Only $200 more retail, so maybe less after discounts.
2) Controllable features: Crossover, Input mixing, EQ, 50 User presets to try
3) Woofer upgrade
4) Bigger box but only 6lbs more
5) MUCH better response 90hz to 120hz (Per JBLs given specs)
6) Dual handles less awkward to carry

Just seems like a lot of upgrade for low cash

OK... Just my opinion here... After comparing the 2 on JBL's site:

The PRX718 has a smaller footprint. More Power (1500 to SRX1000), With the slopes as they are on the PRX to the PRX712 top, you WILL NOT notice the 30 hz dip.

The SRX818 has on board eq/crossover processing/presets.

Over all, Bigger box and LESS power. If you want the multitudes of presets and the extra handles, spend the extra $200.

The quotes i got today were 250 more for srx than prx. I don't think the upgrade is worth that. If it was closer to 150 I'd justify it. They are running that 1000w at 2 ohms on the srx vs 4 ohms on the prx. When i hear 2 ohms i think pushing amps hard and heat.

The new mixers have all the eq on them, don't need it in the subs

I just gotta make sure I can EQ the kick drum out of the mains on Saturday then I know I can wire everything the way I want for the PRX, otherwise I have to fry that fish first.

Too bad about the SRXs but our backs will thank us & they put out the same SPLs. How much better could that SRX really be?

SRX are awesome...well at least the predecessor was. if i am right, these will make for a great series...im doing my best to get a demo...but to no avail just yet.

I think the West Coast port thing is gonna slow down the release but I'm looking forward to your review!

Scott- Wish I could do the Aux thing but I'm out of outs on our old board!

I wish I could say the same. Though in my case it more fizzled out as opposed to blew up. Running lightly constructed class d at 2 ohms with only heat sink for thermal control is not a path I'll follow again... I had no idea the woofers in the 612's were 2 ohms... Makes me wonder what those in the K series are...

Its funny you mention this because I specifically remember doing research & finding your posts about this topic. I'm glad you wrote. I called JBL & in fact the 718XLFs are now 4 ohms 1500w & he did mention the new SRX818 will be 2 ohms 1000w. I really think they fixed your problem with the 718 line but I can understand you being jaded about the line, the 600 series wasn't implemented well.

The 612m's still sound great, no question. Good to hear they beefed up the 700 series. 2 ohm is just too extreme a load for me to tolerate - anywhere. way too close to welding for me to be happy. Once I understood the internals, there was no going home for me... and no question that I'm wondering what lurks in my k series investment...

this stuff, the PRX an K Seies sounds so good that it is easy to forget how competitive the market is and that these boxes are built to a price point - it isn't EAW or Meyer...
