JBL PRX 7 series?

the qsc wants a little dialing in. The very lows are very strong. Dialing them back a little cleans things up. and then they stomp the prx hard. if you leave the DJ flab in on any of this range subs you pay for it in a lack of headroom is my guess. I never bought the 618. I did a side by side with the 618, 181 and an Ev Live X. The 181 was the obvious choice to me. I actually bought the 612's as monitors for the sound co and as occaisional use as a full range main for my acoustic vocal pop thing.

For me the JBL sub I was/am interested in us the stx double 18. a pair of those produces whomping huge bass with the right amp...

They do have a new SRX828sp double 18", its bad ass, but I cant move it store it or fit in on stage ! haha

The XLF is gonna fit in the space I have & my car a bit better, match the mains aesthetically better but also lighter. They both cross at 100hz. I thought about the KW-181 today

I recently broke down and bought a used Budget 16' truck. I've been beating the crap out of my vehicles with sound gear for two long... 7500 bucks was for me a bit of a gulp but the first load out/in was like, oh yeah, this is going to work. Having all my gear staged and ready to go means that I've got options when I get to a new venue as well. For the typical band scenario, total overkill, I get it.

Last summer I saw a show that had to throw narrow and deep. They had 3 of those double 18's arrayed across the front and 4 db technologies line array cabs flown per side. 1 JBL versa line array cab on the outer pair of subs as dance in fill. The bass was punchy back by the board and punishing up front. The whole system was impressive sounding. Clear punchy, full, round. Nice! The artist was Curtis Salgado, Tracy Arrington on bass. Heard Tracy real well in the back.

Those double 18's crank... They were the passive boxes with what looked like a CA12 driving each... A couple of years from now, I want to be able to compete at that level...

Incoming 718XLF ! Gig the next Saturday too

I've pretty much found out that the SRX818sp is getting the same or a VERY similar woofer so the extra cost is all redundant fluff. Unless you're using the higher series cabs with it. I dunno, the extra frequencies specs with the same woofer? I dunno

I'm just plain excited to see what these bring & hell may get a second one.

Got a quote from for another pair of 712PRX & QSC K12s for myself from RMCaudio... they have come WAY down, are the same price & I've seen them selling for more used on CL. Its so tempting because you cant lose that much money on the secondary market when you're done with them at this point.

I'm leaning QSC only because with 1 sub I'd need to run both L&R into the sub then out to the tops to use the crossover on the JBLs. The QSC has a built in crossover mode, 2 handles & probably a bit higher resale value due to recognition but its close... then I could sell my Driverack for $300


or maybe I shouldnt' sell the driverack! UGH!

This thing is HUGE... but its skinny which is what I need to fit in the car with other gear & the space I have for storage. I'm VERY glad I didn't get the SRX818sp thats bigger & from what I'm reading has the same driver. It would be far too big to move alone. This 718XLF is the limit for sure! Good a good deal on a cover. Glad I got it because theres no way I was moving it in the box back to my place!

Gotta try it out Thursday afternoon

718XLF vs Mackie SRS1500. Fair fight? Not really but I compared them at a volume the Mackie could still do.

The 718XLF hits hard & is deep. I played a bunch of dance stuff & there were songs where the XLF volume was as strong on the lowest notes of the bass riff as the higher while the SRS 1500 definitely had some roll off lower. The stuff that was in the range of the SRS at a volume it could do, it actually hung fairly well with the XLF. The SRS definitely had some "bleed" i would call it playing some content WELL above its crossover point that was just muffled & distorted while the XLF was bass & thats it. I know the SRS has a higher range up to 120 hz but even though I heard it, I didn't like it. I prefer the XLF not trying to do that stuff at all. Obviously volume wise the 18" vs the 15" its no contest. The XLF had much more room to spare & I never pushed it to any distortion. I'm gonna wear in the speaker a bit first. Definitely 1 XLF to 2 SRS1500s though.

I honestly see the XLF as more of a DJ sub than a band sub. I think you can get away with a sub that goes to 40hz vs 30hz like this guy. The kick on most songs I played was not too far off in the comparison. The REAL difference was the very low electronic \ hip hop stuff.

Again, this thing is not easy to move, grab a Magna Cart or a $7 dolly at Harbor freight. Its just so awkward. if you are shorter that 5 8 you're gonna have trouble reaching around the sub. Once you have it up, its not horrible & thats when you feel its lighter than other subs.

I'm VERY glad I got this sub, I couldn't have fit any other sub into my spaces & I honestly dont think I could have moved anything bigger by myself. It hits super hard, looks great, built like a tank and anything marginally smaller would have been a serious compromise to sound.

The 20" width is CRUCIAL to me. Putting this & a GK NEO 412, a rack, a large luggage bag, a bass & lighting in a Honda Fit, every inch counts. Its gonna be a tight squeeze. Where I store my sub I literally have not a free centimeter so I had to rule out a bunch of subs on that alone.

718XLF gig report!

MONSTEROUS. I mean, SERIOUSLY destructive. We were in a "medium" sized bar thats long & I went out there with the wireless. The kick drum was BUSTING down the doors at the end of the club at 50% of the volume we had the old sub. The projection was incredibly impressive & it was hitting hard still out there. I hooked it up to an Audix D6 kick drum mic which "pre EQs" more low end in which is perfect for this sub.

And this was with NO eq & the mic on the pillow. I could only imagine how awesome it would be if we had the proper setup of EQ & could put the mic in various positions around the drum for the best sound.

One is MORE than enough, we were probably 25% up on the volume while with the dual SRS1500s they BOTH were up 70% & didnt project like this. I'm telling you, two is complete overkill unless you're rocking some serious outdoor gigs (Ours are local town events that pay crap so we aren't busting the budget for those)

Told Ya So!!!!! :p:p:p:p I've got 2 on Lay-A-Way right now. I'll be picking them up for an outdoor show in 2 weeks. PRX712s on top and the XLFs on bottom. Can't wait!! It's for a local Community Pot Luck thing in a small bandshell/covered patio. 2 may be overkill, but I won't have to push them hard at all. Plus, the old adage... Better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

Plus, the Mackie DL1608 worked Flawlessly. This really is a trick little rig. Just for fun... I did get 2-712s for Mon duty and am looking to add 2 more.

I used the 718XLF again this weekend with the kick drum mic properly set up. Its just awesome. I couldn't imagine a need for 2. We only had the thing up like 33%, to the 1st line there and it was overpowering the club as it was. Theres no way indoors for a regular restaurant, club, bar venue we'd need more than 1. Outdoors sure! A pro stage for national acts? Sure but they probably have their own built in sound system anyway at that size.

I'm positive you'll get away with one man, unless you guys are the Foo Fighters & I dont know it! haha

I'm glad you were able to find a sub that fit the bill. I was impressed with these when I heard them. I've worked in major Event Production Services for quite a while so it takes a bit of doing to impress me. We are looking to do Back Yard parties, small Festivals and the like so I'll do 2 just in case. Let me know how that continues to perform for you.
