Serious bummer. RIP and thanks for sharing your talent.

Beck was one of the greats, but whether he was the best “at least from the UK” is not something I would presume to judge. Here we can claim not only Jeff Beck, but also Jimmy Page, Gary Moore, John McLaughlin, Dave Gilmour, Steve Howe, Allan Holdsworth, Eric Clapton, Steve Hillage, Tony Iommi…
Geez, the man died and was loved by many and here you are bickering over semantics…. That’s truly f**kin sad

I was a wee sprat when "Truth" came out in 1968. This was an early favorite, I think of it as his tutorial on dynamics: Ain't Superstitious--at around 2:20 one of the loudest "rests" in rock'n'roll.

Saw him live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1969. When he started soloing, Stewart went to the back of the stage. Many years later, I caught a video of him playing what sounded like a raga. His right hand was incredibly busy: He was working the volume knob with his pinky, the whammy bar between thumb and forefinger, and his index and middle fingers plucking strings. Moments when he made his Strat sound like a deranged songbird.

And a quick word: His death is sad, but don't call it a tragedy. That would have been if he'd died at 27. He had a wonderful career, and was always considered a top player, at a time when that really meant something--when he and Hendrix and a bunch of other guys were just starting to see the potential of the electric guitar.

My mom who was sorta jazz, Motown and classical snob, thought that Jeff Beck was very musical and the only electric guitar player that she liked (aside Wes, Joe Pass, Pat Martino etc) . She would be 6 years older than Jeff. I definitely put him apart and above than the other Yardbirds guitarist.

We all have to go and he contributed so much, so what would sadness and feeling a loss do. I am glad he did not have to suffer long. I am also really glad that he included talented women in his band in what would otherwise be male dominated scene.
