Jeff Beck R.I.P.

I can't say I'm as familiar with Jeff Beck's work as I might be. One thing I can say is that I can't think of any guitarist who has been held in such high esteem by such a wide variety of the guitarists I've known. It didn't matter if the guitarist was a rocker, a blues player or a jazzer - when the subject of Jeff Beck came up there would be nothing but admiration expressed.

I am devastated to hear the news of the death of my friend and hero Jeff Beck, whose music has thrilled and inspired me and countless others for so many years," Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour tweeted. "Polly‘s and my thoughts go out to his lovely wife Sandra. He will be forever in our hearts."

Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones tweeted that he felt "like one of my band of brothers has left this world, and I’m going to dearly miss him. I’m sending much sympathy to Sandra, his family, and all who loved him. I want to thank him for all our early days together in Jeff Beck Group, conquering America."

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi said he was "totally shocked" to hear about Beck’s death. "Jeff was such a nice person and an outstanding iconic, genius guitar player - there will never be another Jeff Beck," he wrote. "His playing was very special & distinctively brilliant! He will be missed. RIP Jeff -Tony"

Ozzy Osbourne tweeted, "I can’t express how saddened I am to hear of @JeffBeckMusic’s passing. What a terrible loss for his family, friends & his many fans. It was such an honor to have known Jeff & an incredible honor to have had him play on my most recent album, #PatientNumber9. Long live #JeffBeck."

Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler referred to Beck as "Truly one of the greats."

Mick Jagger wrote, "With the death of Jeff Beck we have lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world. We will all miss him so much."

Rod Stewart commented, "Jeff Beck was on another planet . He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven’t looked back since."

Gene Simmons of KISS called the news "heartbreaking." He added, "No one played guitar like Jeff. Please get ahold of the first two Jeff Beck Group albums and behold greatness. RIP."

Sammy Hagar wrote: "Absolutely one of my favorite guitarist of all time! The ‘Truth’ album changed my life. As a singer and guitarist, I wanted to be Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart rolled into one— we all did. What a loss. We will all miss Jeff. My love and condolences to his family and loved ones."

"My condolences to the family & friends of #JeffBeck," Bret Michaels tweeted. "His album ‘Wired’ was a guitar soundtrack of my youth."

Paul Young wrote that he was "devastated" over the news: "He was loved by everyone in the know; the guitarists guitarist! My condolences to his family & friends RIP."

"The great Jeff Beck has taken his genius and gone home," Rick Springfield tweeted. "My guitar idol since age 15. For the uninitiated, check out his amazing work on (where do I begin) Roger Waters ‘Amused to Death’. His gift was impossible to copy and won’t be repeated. Thankful for huge legacy. God speed JB."

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

Someone hipped me at 15yo to Blow by Blow and that was the gateway to instrumental music. That lead to Miles, Weather Report, Jaco, Mahavishnu, Jean Luc Ponte, Return to Forever, and the Dixie Dregs. And then that opened the door for Coltrane, Dizzy, Mingus and the entire jazz world in my late teens/early 20s.

He was foundational in my love of music and I'm eternally in his debt.

RIP you legend, innovator, and barrier smasher. You changed the world.

I finally saw Blow Up a few months ago. It was a great movie.
Except that club scene was a bit of a joke. The Who were originally slated to do it(hence the guitar smashing)but Townshend got into an argument with director Antonioni over how it was to be done, so they bailed. The Yardies were next on the list, and needed a payday, so they went along with the silliness. The Italian director wanted to frame a picture of “Swinging London”, but constructed this weird, apathetic scenario, and the band was not amused. They usually had very excited crowds. By the time the film came out, that era had passed for the most part, the Summer of Love was on the horizon, and Beck had split the band.

That brief period of the band with both Beck and Page did produce a forshadowing of psychedelia, maybe even metal…

JPJ on bass.

Jimmy Page: The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans. Jeff Beck Rest in Peace.

Billy F Gibbons: I met Jeff Beck when I was 17 and I was glad to know a guy like that, a guy who was able to show me how this guitar playing thing should be approached and that’s still very much the case. Jeff was a wondrous soul and we already miss him tremendously.

Brian Wilson: I’m so sad to hear about Jeff Beck passing. Jeff was a genius guitar player, and me and my band got to see it close up when we toured with him in 2013. One of the highlights we did was “Danny Boy” – we both loved that song. Love & Mercy to Jeff’s family.

Paul Stanley: WOW. What awful news. Jeff Beck, one of the all time guitar masters has died. From The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group on, he blazed a trail impossible to follow. Play on now and forever..

Randy Bachman: Farewell to the phenomenal #guitarist #JeffBeck who has graced us with his #music since the 60's. One of the best in the world & an incredible inspiration to so many guitarists including myself. Peace to his family & friends. As always, his music will live on forever. #RIP

Buddy Guy: The loss of our friend Jeff Beck is crushing. All our love and prayers go out to his family, his friends, and his fans around the world. Until we meet again, Jeff. - Team BG

Warren Haynes: So, now when someone asks me “Who’s your favorite guitarist — living or dead?” I will say what I always say: “I can’t answer that.” But my very short list will include Jeff. There will never be another Jeff Beck. RIP.

Joe Perry: Jeff Beck was the Salvador Dali of guitar, to see him play was to hear the ultimate 6 string alchemist create magic in a world of its own. With his passing, the world is a poorer place. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Sandra. We share your sorrow.

Joe Satriani: Jeff Beck was a genius, a stunning original. He was an astounding guitar player with more ways to make you go, “*** was that?” than anybody else. He was profoundly talented, and never stopped innovating on the instrument. R.I.P. Jeff.

Stevie Van Zant: RIP Jeff Beck. Having trouble processing this. Not only was he a major influence, and his genius an infinite source of joy my entire lifetime, he was in great spirits when we spoke a few weeks ago having done a flawless show with Johnny the night before at the Capitol. Unreal.

Ernie Ball: The Ernie Ball company would like to express our deepest condolences to the Jeff Beck family and fans around the world. For over 40 years, Jeff was an invaluable member of our artist family. His extraordinary guitar style and legendary musical contributions will be greatly missed.

Gibson: We are deeply saddened to hear of Jeff Beck’s passing. He was and always will be an inspiration. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and fans. Rest easy, Jeff. Thank you for the music.

Sir Rod Stewart: He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man . Thank you for everything . RIP
