That's exactly the way I've always felt about instruments. My first bass (which I still play regularly) is a Squier Affinity P-Bass which I got for $50 on eBay. About $130.00 later, and having replaced just about everything but the body and neck, it sounds and plays as well as any Fender MIM P-Bass I've played, and for a fraction of the cost. Pay two grand for a bass? Never!
I agree! if one finds a bass body tht feels great, then 75% of the instrument's requirements have been filled. The other 25%, that of sound or desire of particular tuning pegs or bridge, can be acquired for a couple of hundred dollars. Result: a custom designed bass with a great neck and your choice of tone.
