Jule Amps Monique Part 2.

Jule's really made playing even more joyful...I really love Monique...punchy, deep, solid, big, natural, she loves going from quiet to loud and the band dynamic has definitely fed off of what she does.

I don't know if you can view, but here's a brief clip from last Friday's show, the camera mic is blown out by the volume, not only from me but from the crappy sub that was only muddying the waters.

The punch was evident however. Must have been great there! It's also visible that your touch is efficient and light.
I can also hear from the authority of that punch, that that rig can take out everybody. You're trying to stay on the good side of the SPCA at least.

I was only turned up a little bit...the guys are used to hearing me much louder. ;) That's a fun room for us. It's a coffee house/restaurant by day that turns into a live music venue at night. They're just about the only all ages place in the University area (and just wrapped up a 'Diners Drive-ins and Dives shoot last week) We do this thing where we do a first week of school show...used to do it for free, now charge 5 bucks at the door. We hit the campus HEAVY with fliers for it, and get a lot of new people. Of the 105 paid at the door (a pretty full room at that place), only about 5 are our 'regulars'. That locks us in for 4 years with some new fans and helps our numbers. This band is a new incarnation, so we only gigged lightly in the spring and summer. Oh, and we walked out with decent cash too. ;)

I also laid off most of my playing and practicing time over the summer and only in the past week really got on the boat and did some serious woodshedding to get my chops together. I've been laying into 1 to 2 hours a day to get my fingers moving.

Its really fun to feel like a real bass player again. And Monique really sounds fantastic.

And the punch (my settings from left to right):

-Treble @ 6:30 o'clock. Nearly all the way back
-Mid @ 3 o'clock
-Low @ 2 o'clock

-Sensitivity @ ~2 o'clock, pulled out.
-My bass' pickups set in parallel between the two of them, and in series within each one.
-My preamp (OBP-1) Treble rolled off about 1/3 from center detent (flat), Bass flat.
-fdeck HPF-series 3 between Monique and my power amp, 12db roll @35, with the second 12db filter set to about ~40-45hz.
-IPR-3000 run bridged, attenuators set at 9 o'clock.

Question for Jule (or others with a Monique):

I read a post in another thread here on TB that was talking about the difference between using a balanced versus unbalanced input into the power amp. The poster said that many power amps are actually 6 dB less sensitive with an unbalanced input, in other words, the unbalanced connection is 6 dB weaker, meaning the preamp has to be boosted that much higher in order to drive the power amp adequately.

I have a Crest CA9 power amp, which, as most people know, has a .775v input sensitivity. If I acquire a Monique and plug it into the Crest, will I need to be concerned about whether I am feeding the Crest an unbalanced signal?

I have an amp with a .775v input and also a balanced line. The Monique does have a balanced output now, so it shouldn't be a problem... but I will say that I run mine unbalanced, because I run a fdeck HPF-3 in between my pre and my power amp...and it still seems to have plenty of healthy level to it.

Monique Surprised me at band practice tonight!

We are auditioning singers and tonight I was too lazy to bring a Berg 210 in my wife's Mini to practice.

I leave a little TC Electronic 1x12 at our rehearsal spot, so I used that with my Mesa M9 and the Monique. Holy crap! I was amazed at the punch. My guitarist was blown away. Monique is a keeper!:hyper:

One downside or user error? When plugging Monique into the effects loop of the Mesa, there is not that much headroom. Not just with the TC cab either.... At a gig level rehearsal with 2x Berg AE210's, my Monique line level is 2:00-3:00 at least. Not bypassing the Mesa Pre? Crushingly loud. Any advise?

Don't be afraid to leave the monique's line level up high, then control the amp from the power stage. I've been running mine a little lower lately with my amp bridged, but was basically leaving the Monique all the way up or nearly so and riding the attenuators on my power amp for volume level.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the M9 had an unusual signal path in that the "Master" control affected the signal before the FX send, so plugging into the FX return just results in the preamp controlling the volume.

P.S. Funny how there seems to be a significant amount of cross-subscription in the Monique/Dingwall/M9/ShuttleMax/Bergantino threads.... :D

On a sad note: Played 3 hour gig last night playing funk and jazz covers...couldn't bring my rack-mount Monique :( :scowl: ...then the backline Hartke ceased functioning :rollno:...so I had to go direct through a DI box I've never heard of, and try to hear myself out of a monitor that was pointed to the opposite side of the stage...next to the drummer :mad: I've never missed Momo so much in my life. :bawl:

I've had that night. Ugh. Luckily I'll have my Monique on stage with us tonight. The rough part is where I've been really sick all week and now I'm wrapping it up with a full work day followed with a show after not sleeping last night...and I'll be going until probably 3am. :bawl: I'm ready for a nap.

Similar situation with me. Started off sick, Worked a full day and gigged til 1, Didn't sleep for a whole night because I had to learn 30 songs for the gig last night...and be to work by 8am, worked a full day, then gigged til midnight:crying::bawl:

I'm stunned I didn't die. :help: lol

After a number of years playing (a large number of them), I've been on stage in bad shape before...like a 104 degree fever and propped up against my amp to remain upright. Tonight I just worry about keeping my energy and focus. Luckily it's only an hour set for us.

I can't wait to get my Bamboo Monique so this situation will not repeat itself...at least not completely. :hyper:
