Jule Amps Monique Part 2.

I have received a few PMs about the logistics and potential hidden costs of getting a Monique into Canada, so as i have done this twice, I thought I would post a quick note about how easy buying a Monique directly from Jule is if you are in Canada.:)

First of all, Jule did not not ship UPS to Canada. This is important as UPS are a bunch of scumbags. Sorry, they are crooks when they ship packages from the US to Canada (they are ok going the other way but will still charge duties). UPS is the only carrier I know of that charges 25-40% of the purchase price as duties, handling and tax. $250-400 EXTRA on a $1000 amp? Crazy but true.

Ok, enough of my UPS rant.:p

In any case, Jule ships quickly (1 week or less from door to door to Toronto on both occasions) and the amps are packaged incredibly well. Also, the way he ships, there is a much smaller chance you will pay tax. You will NOT pay any insane clearing fees or duty, but you MAY have to pay sales tax (13% in Ontario). Both of my Monique orders were 100% free of any tax, which is cool, but there is a slim chance you may get dinged for sales tax only.

The whole process is simple and Monique is just killer (I loved it so much, I have 2).

I am using an XTI2000 briged into 4ohm MESA PH215 and 4om PH412. No issues and plenty power to cause massive sinkholes.

I think the most common sensitivities one sees are 0.7ish, 1, and 1.4V.

1.4V is the high end of that scale, and some bass pres (especially pedal formats) may have trouble pushing it to full potential.

From what I understand, Monique should be fine. (I remember it being a potential issue early on, or perhaps only a few with bad tubes had that trouble... but either way no longer a concern. I think.)

You have it spot on. In fact there is more than 1.4 V there, but let's just spec. it that way.

Because some of us prefer the "old" levels and characteristics, when that Line Out knob is pushed in you have exactly that, the "old" levels. As one of my cherished mentor/friends here privately told me, "Preferences are cool." The point being my job is to give the choices to you all, and let you decide.

Do you have a Jule Amps hat? If so let me know your shipping address. I guarantee that "sinkhole" will show up in future Monique terminology.

Shipping is important. About seven years ago we sent an amp to a new customer in Finland. Thought it was pretty well packed. It arrived totally busted, smashed.

Took care of the customer and sent him another amp as soon as I could build one. Since then he and I have become family friends.

Second story: We sent another amp to a customer in Padua Italy about 5 years ago, and it never arrived. I had Jule Amps stickers all over the box. We later proved that it was stolen by an Italian Postal worker (with apparently good taste).

Again, a replacement amp was sent. The customer has now bought several more for his studio (that all arrived safely).

So . . . pack crazy well and leave the outer box unlabeled. We are batting 100% on shipping since those incidents.

We have also (thanks to a recommendation from a kind new customer in New Zealand) recently found an international shipping forwarder that uses DHL. Not usually a big deal, but this has helped us lower International Shipping costs by as much as 30%. That I consider a big deal.

Thanks for the advice on the XTI2000 all!

I bought a used one from another TBer and I am looking forward to the "sinkhole" experience when it arrives next week..:hiding:

I am very interested in comparing it to my Crest ProLite 2.0 but will be keeping both in any case.:hyper:

Also, I have both of my Moniques at home and will get to AB them tonight. It will be rare that both of them will be in the same place moving forward, so i am looking forward to seeing if different tubes make a noticeable difference. The dove cage is from mid last year and the rack arrived this week.

Hey Jule,

Have you ever considered squeezing a Monique-like preamp into a stomp pedal? Seems like a cant miss these days. Slap a cool kindergarten drawing on a $10 build your own shell, come up with a crazy but hip name .... Boom! $249.95 plus shipping. Cha-Ching!:hyper:

Using than a single 12AX7 would be problematic though.
