Jule Amps Monique part 4

Has anyone mounted the Monique in a SKB X-Rack (Shallow)?

It should fit the dimensions from the SKB website, but I see the opening on the backside of the rack is pretty small. It could come in conflict with the power chord maybe?

Hi All - been a long-time lurker, just got in touch with Jules and have my place in line for a September build. The question is, I can't decide whether the rackmount or tardis (free-standing aluminum case) will serve me best.

Part of the dilemma is that I am not sure ultimately how I will use Monique. Right now I'm running a Streamliner 900 into two Baer M112s - I may try the SL power section for a while, for which the Tardis version would work well, but I am also contemplating going to a separate power amp. I've never gone for rack rigs before - I like to keep things simple - but if I go the power amp route, I can see where it would be handy to have everything in one cabinet.

I would appreciate hearing any thoughts from those of you in the Monique camp for some time - I've read through all of this thread and get some ideas indirectly, but not much that speaks directly to the cabinet configuration.

I have the Dove cage and have been using it with the Puma 900 power section and the Crest prolite 2.0.

I can tell you there is a huge difference between the two power sections. I'm also confident that the crest would be much better than the streamliner 900 power section (I used to use the 900 for power with my read pre).

The difference I notice is that when I use the crest power amp, my sound is much cleaner and clearer, but more importantly the thump is outstanding. It is not so much that there is more low end, there is just more air being pushed and much more feel to the notes I play. The thickness is incredible and ghost notes really pump. It's funny I never though there would be that much difference until I tried it.

I still use the puma 900 power from time to time when I don't feel like lugging my rack out. It still sounds really good.

I almost bought the rackmount Monique, but I love the sexiness of the dove cage. While its not always practical, especially when I bring my rack. I guess it would be easier if I had the rackmount and had everything wired in one rack, but what are we really talking here... 2 cables to hook up... Not a big deal to me.

I like having the flexibility and portability of the DC for different applications.

Anyhow, I would highly recommend using a real power amp with Monique. If you don't, you won't be getting what it can fully put out. I was really surprised when I made the change.

Congrats, you will very likely absolutely love Monique!

In any case, and IMO only, the Tardis is not a great fit for most people. The De-Monique version is great, but a Tardis non-powered preamp is a pain. You still need a poweramp (almost all are rack) or another amp. If you are using a rack poweramp, why not rack the Monique with it?

The dove cage is in the same boat, but it does at least look super cool.

YMMV, but I own a rack as well as a dove cage Monique and the rack gets most of the gigs. Just easier to being one 4U rack than a 2U rack and a separate poweramp.

Thank you both for the replies - I am inclined towards the rack version with power amp; one way of looking at it is that gives me something to do over the next 7 wks while I wait my turn!

I'll be digging into TB forums to see if I can find the ideal combination of lightweight case and power amp. One thing that I know that I do not want is to end up with a 30+ lb. schlepp (technical term).....

I am a big fan of my Crest ProLite 2.0/Monique/Gator case setup.

Light, fairly inexpensive and powerful as hell!

I actually run the crest bridged. I'm using 2 cabs with my setup. A Baer ML112 and a Dr Bass compact 112. Both are rated at 8 ohms each and I run them in parallel for a 4 ohm load.

For me, I found when I ran each cab on separate channels, I was hitting the limiter on the crest at times. When I run it bridged, this does not happen. Obviously you have to be very careful when running it bridged because it puts out a lot of power (I think 2000 watts) and you can blow up your speakers.

I run my volumes on the crest at about 10 o'clock, and I use my fdeck series 3 hpf as my master volume ( I have it setup in between Monique and the crest.

Thanks to the fellow TB'ers here who turned me on to the crest prolite. It is light and made very well and sounds great. I am really pleased with the amp.

If I was tossing my rig in a band van, I'd have the rack version. Since I carry my own gear and prefer the aesthetic, dove cage for me. The Minnie power amp slides into the laptop sleeve on my Mono Producer bag (Puma 900 fits there as well, not at the same time) so logistics are pretty seamless.

Monique gets a lot of attention and questions and fits the vibe of most of the bands I play with. A rack is just a rack, though that is an aesthetic in and of itself.

I keep the volume on my poweramp on full and adjust Monique to taste.

I generally don't bridge (never with one 210 cab) as one channel on the Crest is almost 1000W. If I play an outdoor gig and need lots of stage volume (and use 2 x 210 cabs), I might run in bridge mode.

The crest prolite 2.0 is no where near 1000w on one channel. Do you have a different model?

The Minne definitely holds some appeal but is pricey compared to typical power amps; do you find a tonal advantage to it, or is its primary benefit the small footprint and (very) cool factor?I too haul my own gear so that is why I am somewhat hesitant to get into "rack" mode.......

Tonal advantage compared to what? I haven't run mine with a rack mount power amp but I have used the power section of my Puma 900. The Minnie sounded different than the Puma 900 power section - lower noise floor and a bit smoother tone.

Truth be told I bought it for the form factor. Sounds great though and has tons of headroom. It fits in my bag so the carry is easy. I'm not a big fan or hauling racks around - I went micro to downsize and a 19" rack is more supersize by comparison. The Monique/Minnie combo only requires one more bag (the Superslips bag for Monique) compare to the Puma.

The tone is awesome and I dig the look. Like I said, if I was on the road and had other people hauling my gear I'd have the rack deMonique in a small rack. Or if I had a bunch of other rack gear but I like to travel light given 100+ load in/out a year. And I dig the look.

The Protec Rack Bag. Theres a wooden rack case inside with rack rails covered in Cordura. Its lighter than Calzone racks and more portable than the SKBs to me. The SKB type can get awkward when loaded. These are an easy carry and can look less ominous than a rack (in more sedate or formal settings) yet have all the functionality. It doesn't bang up the inside of vehicles. For me it's a good compromise between the mini format and the full on need a roady. :) I do schlep my own gear. :)

Nope. I can't say I have a different ProLite 2.0 than anyone else.

The 2.0 does over 1000w on one channel at 2ohms and 600w at the 4ohms I generally run it at. I wont be running in 2ohms as I just sold the last of my 4ohm cabs, so I guess 600w is the correct # with my 2 x 4 ohm cabs. My bad.

I use the Demonique in a Peterson rack; it works great, the "form factor" works for me, and it protects my investment. It's a one hand carry, and as I said, my Demonique is safe.
