Jule Amps Monique part 5

Playing in a big church this weekend (3000 seater). Nice big FOH system...sound man always tweaking the backline bass amp...never quite happy and my in-ears never sounding very good. Finally decided to bring in Monique Dovecage and bam! Plug and play, with a twist of Sensitivity knob, and Tonal bliss!

Went to rehearsal last night and due to severe storms, went without Monique and simply used the church's amp and DI. Not thinking this would be a big deal...You should have seen the "bummed" expressions from everyone that got to hear Monique for the first time last week and then back to the old. Amazing how focused, full, warm and punchy. I think I've created a few more Jule fans and won't let a little rain deter my setup in the future.

Yeah, sometimes it's easy to take it for granted, but once it's gone, you remember right quick. I had to send mine to Jule recently and while my 'backup' is by all accounts another phenomenal pre, It definitely wasn't Mo'...

...And in the studio this week we've been running with a second engineer as our producer/engineer is away. We were doing some backup vocals & percussion tracks. The engineer loaded up a specific roots number and rolled. Then stopped. Turned up the Genelecs in the room and re-cued and played the track louder. Then stopped again. Shook his head, and said Then he said "Holy 5h1t... that bass tone is just so ****in' NASTY...That's awesome...how did you guys get that tone..." This is a guy who works that board and in that studio regularly and has been involved in some great projects there.

The answer was Monique EQ'ed and set up exactly like I use it live with my bass set up exactly like I use it live.

Yup! I recently took in a Magellan 800 on a trade. It is a really sweet, wonderfully executed micro. Were it not for my ear being irreparably spoiled by Moni, I would have been very happy with that amp. BUT, when I went back and forth, I was just still so enamored with Monique and how easy it is to use, and repeatably set up to get "my tone." That warm, tubey, yet bouncy, bubbly and still accurate and fast tone.

It certainly would have been economically more favorable had I liked the Magellan as much or more than Monique. I could have freed up some cash for other band gear. But I just couldn't get there. Oh well.......:bassist:;)

I've always thought of my 'instrument' being not just my bass but also what goes on in the amp stage. What Jule's preamp does is very specifically a musical thing more than just a technical thing if that makes sense. It is additive in the feel and tone rather than merely reproductive.

I would have run both, but we were already doubling with a U5, and I felt that asking for a 3rd line was maybe a bit of a diva move.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to some 'finished product' because there are some places where I'm down below the E and it just sounds stupid clean and big, one of our riddims runs on a Dm/Gm progression and that anchoring D below E sounds fantastic. And there's another song where I close out a chorus with a low C that has a fair amount of space around it. Although the bass sounds even and consistent no matter where you 're playing it.

As far as using Mo as part of my backline it sounds great into the power 'amp in' on my reissue V4b and a pair of sealed 210AVs, it's a significant improvement to the front end of the V4b. The AI Clarus has come up short as a power option, even with my EANL210 and NM410. I have decided to get rid of most of my extra gear, Reddi & both EA cabs sold, AI seems to be sold but not finalized. While the V4b is a bit on the large side I'm only concerned with replacing it with better, smaller/lighter would be nice but better is really the test. I need some more rehearsals and gigs to iron out my thoughts on this.

I have a pretty nice practice space I set up at home, I can practice through studio monitors or headphones. I can also play through my amp along with recorded tracks or a metronome. I've had a lot to prepare for over the past few weeks and I'm super comfortable with using Monique. And since it integrates as my DI or as part of the backline I can carry some consistency with me which is great. Like I posted last week I could even grab my tone from a old junky and beat up hartke rig in a run down rehearsal studio...

The idea of minimum-fiddliing to get what you want appeals greatly to me too. I have found that (unlike some unmentionable instrument players) Bass players would much prefer to play, and do the job, rather than fiddle with knobs and switches mid-performance.

A highlight of my recent visit to the London Bass Guitar Show (A great Bass Show) was getting to meet "The Man." He is a kind, supremely gifted artist. When this picture was taken my thoughts were in larger part, "Just don't drop this instrument."

I feel that way every time I play, Jule. :P

Although if you gave it a lil' ding or scratch, you'd probably have to take it home as your new test bass. ;) Did you get a chance to hear the combination of Dingwall/Monique?

No. We didn't get the opportunity. Down the line, I hope to make that happen.
