Jule Amps Monique part 5

Yes.

My friend Paul Sips at Invalid Link Removed has been playing his Monique for quite a few years now at 2.67 ohms. Very stable. I'd have to ask him if he keeps the fan on all the time. I suspect he does. I am sure there are players at 2 ohms. I'll let them pipe in here if they want.

Hypex is a pretty specific about the minimum impedance of the 700. That is 1 ohm.

In my experience, the 2500 watt amp runs quite cool at 2 ohms. The 700 seems to generate a bit more heat at the lower impedance. I have never had a report of either of these amps overheating - which may have a lot to do with the cooling that is part of and built in to each chassis. The over temperature value, the one where the amps goes to idle until it cools is 212F, 100C. That is boiling water hot, so we have a long way to go.

The 700 watt amp gives us:
1200 watts at 2 ohms
700 watts at 4 ohms
440 watts at 8 ohms.

I have a question for you all while we are on amps. What if we had a 500 watt Hypex amp in a pedal box?

Specifically a Hammond 1590DEBK box. It's 2 3/4" tall and 7 3/8" wide (square). Super simple: AC in, On/Off switch, instrument/Line Level in, Dual Speakon out. Oh yeah, and a Volume. The questions are: Is there a need for a portable great sounding and playing beast that could survive very rough physical treatment? Is there enough room on any pedal board for this largish box?

Maybe a standby switch on top. Probably PowerCon AC in so it can't get kicked off by accident.

A good person has already asked if this will reduce the market for the rest of the Jule Amps amps? I suppose it will, but I am just wondering. And yes, I am open to this being a terrible idea. :)

Thanks for the info Jule. The 500 in a small box would be outstanding but those dimensions might be big for a lot of pedal boards. I'm not much of a pedal guy as of now so my opinion probably wouldn't be worth much.

Would the (I'm guessing) smaller size of the 500 make the odds of a slightly larger powered dove cage any better? A taller "base" of the dove cage might provide the room. Nudge nudge wink wink. I had asked you about something like that a couple of years ago and you had said you were in the feasibility stage. I guess it wasn't feasible. :D

I think that this idea has legs and will have strong appeal to an admittedly smaller subset of the playing population.

Hey Jule,

I love the idea of a pedalboard power amp!!!! I thought that was what the M500 was going to be because you had mentioned this before.

As an IEM player, it would be nice to have something like this on my pedal board where I can hook up a small reference speaker, small wedge or sub to feel some lows when using my IEM's. Sometimes when I'm setting up before a gig I wish I had a small speaker on hand to reference some sounds without having to suit up with my IEM's. Some suggestions...

A power amp pedal will most likely be placed all the way to the left of the pedal board and perhaps top row as well if you have two rows of pedals so I would make the instrument input on the right of the pedal, speakon and AC on the top of the pedal, and the volume control and power switch on the face of the pedal for easy access. Btw, there is no need for two speakon connectors, I would only do one to save room. Most bass cabinets already have parallel speakon connectors on them so no need to jam two on the pedal.

And I agree with others, if there is a way to make it a wee bit smaller that would be great! If not, thats cool too... Sign me up for one! I'm all in!! If you make it, I will buy it.

I was originally concerned about the heating on the M2500 in a 4 space SKB with rack Monique. I ran it all winter/spring (mostly indoors) and it did get warmer than many of the mass-produced power amps (IPRs, Prolite, etc), but I never had a problem. This summer I've been playing a bunch of 85-95 degree day gigs with the amp in partial or full sun at volume and I haven't had any trouble. I had considered removing one or two of the vent covers if that did occur, which would provide more air flow. I do have the fans in the M2500 always on and running at full speed.

Amp in a box = cool, but incidental until there's 'preamp in a box' too. ;) Would make for a great backup/spare when in a pinch.

Also, I find myself thinking about form factor and logistics and having my amp/preamp on a board on the floor in front of me also means my DI line, longish speaker cables, more power cables , etc. also running from in front (in a heavily trafficked area) of me around and across stage, etc. on a stage that already has a chaos of cables happening. In which case I'd rather have it perched on top of my speakers, which then somewhat negates having a pedal-sized amp setup, so you're really ending up comparing size/weight for schlep v. the full sized setup.

But then, I'm not 'most guys' mentally, emotionally or musically.

The pre in a pedalboard box is still spread across a lot of territory of my workspace. Had some success.
It will happen. Been a bit gimpish of late. Not easy to sit for any reasonable time. NAMM approach-eth.

Yes. I don't expect the amp-in-a-box to be a game changer. Lots of physically small amps out there.

Eh, it'll happen when it happens. : )

Thank you. I do appreciate this.

To be certain, you see an amp in a box with no jacks, switches or anything else on any of the four sides. Right?

All the connections/controls/switches are on top of the box. Again. . . right?

Wouldn't it be good to have the input on the right side of the box? All else on top?

I do appreciate the feedback. One of the few advantages a small company has over larger companies is the ability to react directly and quickly to the customer. l thank you.

The communication stream to me over these last couple of years has been quite strong in that small is beautiful. Beautiful in that a small device is easier to drag to a recording session for consistency of performance and sound. That was, after all, the original idea behind the Dove Cage.

I have come to know and appreciate the work, the friendship, of players who are doing hundreds of performances a year, and a lot of those performances are at the end of some very long flights. Difficult gear decisions do get made simply on how much we can take with us.

I'm thinking that being a pedal size means it can be included in the ever diminishing in-flight baggage. That means it is quickly making music at end of the cab/uber ride from the airport. I am sure it will also end up on a pedal board, all tidy and pretty, but I'd even take some pleasure knowing it did the job sitting on top of an espresso machine. Hopefully one that is off.

The only thing on the right side is the input jack?

Speaker hooks up on upper side. AC hooks up on upper side. ?? Everything else on top. ?

Other good folk suggest putting everything on the top. Whaddyathink?

When most effect users say top jacks they mean the "top side", not the actual top. Wiring to the actual top in a two or three tiered EFX rack means cables and feet interacting in a bad way.

...says the guy who uses zero effects pedals.

Thank you my friend. Got your NAMMage stuff done yet?

I do appreciate the clarification. Not much of a pedal guy myself. Don't tell anybody, but the only one I really like is the looper. ;)

Heh. I actually love effects in certain contexts, but pedals just don't work well for me at all. Bending over makes my butt look big, and we can't have that!

Yep, just got my hotel reservations for Disneyland done and have a pretty good roadmap for all the basses that will need preamp installs for the show. And then of course I have a wish list for other things I'd like to have done, like an all tube amp prototype and some other things I'm not allowed to talk about. How about you, are you and the Divine Ms. M going to go again?

Hey Jule. Take a look at the Mesa Subway DI pedal. It has a really nice layout. I think that will help clarify what I was trying to explain.

I loved the platform of the subway di pedal. I sold mine once i got my monique, but the layout and feature set was superbly done. I didnt need a 3 or space rack with the subway. Just a two space for my power amp and the little subway di sitting atop all small and everything. The monique's tone reigns supreme though. A pedal monique with everything on the back of the subway di would be incredible mix up

I agree. The Subway DI layout is perfect and it is a killer preamp as well. A Monique pre in this format would be fantastic too.

I was actually referring to a pedal board power amp in this format. Just wanted to give Jule some clarity as to what I was describing concerning the connection layout.
