Jule Amps Monique part 5

Still getting the hang of it but am really enjoying it so far. Except that I underestimated the size of everything. Had hoped for a 3u amp and 1u pre and it hasn't worked out that way.

Pretty sure I can feel the thump here. Very powerful rig.

I could be mistaken, but I think that may be one of the first rack mount Monique enclosures. The difference between then and now is cosmetic. The "guts" are the same.

The only thing I have that will fit into a 1U enclosure is the rather new Hypex 500 watt amp. That is why it fits nicely in the Simone 500.

And the guts of it are beautiful! Huge understatement to say that you do very nice work. You left some notes inside, looks like it was built in Dec. '12 and "rebuilt" in Oct. '17.

Yes. When it gets close to a decade of use, I enjoy getting in there to poke around if the opportunity comes up. Cleaning the pots is a good thing to do, but nobody needs me for that. A can of DeoxIT DS is all anyone needs. Detest scratchy pots.

All the Amplified units with a Fan in them can, after a few years, benefit from a bit of scrubbing the fan blades. Dust builds up on the fan blades. Easily knocked off with a worn out toothbrush. After that, good for a few hundred more gigs. Sometimes a can of that compressed air we use to clean keyboards is even better than a brush.

It is possible that in Dec 2012, your Monique did not have the push pull feature on the Line Out. I suspect that was the modification in 2017. That push pull feature adds up to +10db to the signal chain, and has morphed into the variable Drive feature on Simone.

As I roll into the "Golden Years" :) I take increased satisfaction knowing that this stuff will be making music for generations to come. Grandpa was a carpenter. As we used to drive though town he would point out buildings and shops that he had built. Always felt proud.

Not sure "normal" is the right word, because you shouldn't have noise, but whatever you have, from whatever source will certainly be more prominent when you add +10db. That is what happens when the Line Level is pulled out.

hmm, even when I turn the volume down to level match the noise floor is still higher. I'll experiment around and see if I can get any other clues

Picked up a Crest CA-9 to try with the Monique rack. First: I've read how heavy that amp is, but yeah that thing is absurdly heavy. But second: it really does sound very good. I haven't tried a lot of power amps, but of the three I have used so far (Mesa M180, VHT 2/90/2, and the CA-9), I think it's my favorite.

But man, I think it weighs more than the 4U, 180-watt Mesa M-180 tube amp.

So I've had a Jule Monique/CA9 for a week or so along with a SVT-CL (Heritage). Playing them both into a Heritage 810.

I typically use the SVT with all controls at noon except the Master at maximum and I use the Gain knob to control the decibles/volume.

The Monique/CA9 can be made to sound very very similar, at least to my (probably shot) ears. Sensitivity (pushed in) and Bass around 3:00. Mids around 11:00, Treble a bit past 1:00. I was surprised at how well the Monique stays together with the bass up that high, given some comments that it leans dark. Maybe the CA-9 helps deliver the punch despite the high bass setting.

There's a subtle grunt or snort to the SVT that the Monique doesn't do. But of course the Monique can make tones the SVT can't by rolling down the sensitivity knob, which to my ear makes the amp more polite sounding.

Anyway, just my thoughts on a direct comparison with the SVT, which maybe would interest others.

I couldn't believe how heavy it was when I went to lift it. I thought it was caught or stuck and couldn't figure it out. After a lot of fussing and prodding, I realized it wasn't stuck. It was just HEAVY. Ugh.

Two different filament supplies in Monique. There is a DC 6 volt filament supply set up to supply three tubes at 300 ma. The second supply is an AC 6.3 volt filament supply for 1 Amp. Total current <2 amps.
If you are wondering if a 6SN7 will work the answer is "NO." The 6SN7 draws twice as much heater current as the 6SL7. The 6SN7 might work initially, but over time it will destroy the power transformer.
