Jule Amps Monique part 5

Mainly I’m trying to understand what will lessen the effect of the sensitivity knob. Is it buffered effects/active basses?

I’ve used pedal comps for a long time, mostly for tone enhancement, but this unit seems like it has that covered. Really has the thump in the midrange that I like.

I wouldn’t assume that you need something to lessen the effect. Like most old school tube gear everything interacts with each other. The mid knob is dependent on the bass and treble knob. The overall EQ affects the sensitivity settings. Pulling knobs effects all of those as does how hard you drive the input.

I love the sound of my bass through the Reddi DI, the Noble and my retro tube pre. With some time and twiddling I can always get Monique close. It is really a versatile little box.

I’d also add if you are running it as a traditional bass amp and have the ability to set the line level vs a master output there is even more in there.

I’ve even done some wild stuff on a gig and domed everything and just pulled back the main output.

If you haven’t figured out I’m still fired up about her all these years later.

The cool trick with the Noble is engaging the HPF and boosting the lows to get a bit of that pultec style low end boost but otherwise more straight forward.
Ah… so that’s what it’s called. Thanks

I have little recording set up at home and in addition to a few pultec plug ins. I have Gain Lab Audio tube EQ, which is essentially a modern version of the pultec where you can boost and cut the same low frequency. In a more basic way the Noble is able to do the same. Add a bunch of weight to the low end without it becoming flubby. By high passing the lows and then adding them back in with out getting that below 30hz rumble.

Hmmm?

I wish I could give you specifics. It is a good question.

I would expect that the Monique Sensitivity effect would lessen as we shove higher levels into the Input Jack. It isn't something we've tried "lately" - (see below), to determine scientifically. It is a control that doesn't quantify well. At least, I'm not smart enough to do so. But it sounds good.

The gain component of the Sensitivity control is easier to quantify. It is a linear control, so half is half, but it is also low end frequency determinate and Pre-EQ, so that gets a bit weird too.

More than a decade ago we paid a significant amount of $$ to get a complete professional audio spectrum analysis of Monique. It was kind of pretty to look at. Didn't help much. :(

If I understand correctly:

Monique's Sensitivity control varies gain and also varies input impedance. I assume the expectation is for the variable input impedance to produce subtle changes to the voicing of passive pickups. AFAIK inserting any sort of active circuit between the amp and a passive bass should eliminate the loading.

The other potential impact is pulling the Sensitivity control adds a tube stage which slightly modifies tone and feel, and allows you to dial in sort of a grindy quality. The output level also has a pull switch that adds a gain stage. I prefer both pulled. I believe early Moniques lacked one or both pull switches...sorry I can't remember which.

I believe Monique by nature produces a fairly compressed sound. I haven't tried it, but I would expect Monique to take pedals just fine.

The Monique + M700 was the cure for all my compression pedal needs, in fact I sold all that I owned after playing through the Monique + M700, and I am not interested in compression pedals at all anymore. Now if the M+M700 could only do something about my desire for a new bass every six months....
I'll bring it up at the next MRD meeting? :rollno:
Man, I used to hate those things. With mild embarrassment, I admit I used to be (very long ago) in the computer software biz.

Yeah it seems to me the title is maybe a bit sloppy. The write up/product narrative seems to more closely align with Monique and not make claims about a power section. Which is either good (if accurate) or bad (if you’re like me looking for the right opportunity to get back into Jule gear 😆).

Thank you sir Jule! You make the best tone facilitator I’ve ever played.

I did, but I think this is just the preamp/DI. No? I've been out of the Jule game since 2015 while so many new offerings came online.
Hiya Jake.

The pic is not showing Monique with the amp. This pic, as LakeEffect suggests shows Preamp only. Maybe there is a mixup?

It has speaker outs. @juledude , if I remember correctly, you have added a power amp to some preamps. Would that make this an 800?

That amp looks pretty good. I’ve had it saved as a favorite on reverb.

I picked up on years ago that was sold as a rack mount DI and Jule it was as well. Bought it used from GC and it turned out have power and I love it. I already had a Doce cage for years.

If the cab top Tardis on reverb came down a bit I’d pick that up too.
