Jule Amps Monique Part III

Not open for further replies.
My amps are 3/4 to full and the Monique Master is at 10:00 to 2:00.

I get to gigs and don't change a thing, between a 50% dead studio, South American bar or outside.

'Skies, you might want to crank those gains and see what wonders Monique hasn't revealed. ;)
Again, our MMV and often does! :)

Some hi pass filtering was just added to my DSP programming. I'll keep y'all posted. Outside gig in mid June.

I run my power amps at full and the line level around 10:00.

since returning from her latest checkup, my Monique is now SO loud I usually keep the line out (pushed in) at about noon-3:00 and my sensitivity knob is usually pulled out and between noon-2. FWIW, I usually keep the master on the Minnie at about noon, but occasionally I kick it up a little more. Sounds massive ALWAYS. I guess Jule put a different value pot in there when he made it the push/pull knob? It tapers VERY differently and very little movements reflect in massive volume differences. IME at least.

Also, note, in my 'original' picture:

The line level IS cranked. This is a shot from the first night I got the HPF and was taken before I started playing that night. So it looks like its not new/different, but I may have forgotten that I had to bring back the Line level.

I am a bit confused (normal state) and can't figure out if I can help. I am ignorant of the internals of the HPF. I do understand High Pass/Low Cut Filters, but I suspect there is more than that going on in this critter.

It does seem to me that anything we want to label with "unity gain" would only provide "unity gain" within a specific range of input impedance, output impedance and input and output signal levels. Possibly we are working outside of one of those?

Yes, Mitch, your original configuration Monique was greatly different than what you have now.

I originally suggested to James Demeter that he omit the volume knob on the Minnie. I didn't think we needed it.

He wisely kept it for just these kinds of variable "tastes." Some like the amp pushed and the pre-amplifier soft. Others like the amp clean and the pre-amplifier pushed. It is a pretty radical difference.

It looks like a small wattage (recording/small venue) all tube Bass Amp will happen in the near term. It too will have a single volume knob. What if it sat beneath Monique in a squarish cage?

Besides the Minnie (and Burning Skies IPR), what amps are you guys using with the Monique? Do different amps make much of a difference (or any) on the tone side of things, or is one pretty much as good as another depending on power needs, etc?

Jule, I've been envisioning it for years :)

I think a wise decision, especially if you can manage to fit in inside a box with the same footprint as Monique! :bassist::D

I know my Minnie was one of the first if not the first. James asked me a LOT of questions about how I wanted it to look and I remember he had to get in touch with you about the chassis so I can't imagine there were too many before it! I specifically said I wanted a Master knob on the front, so maybe that's why he decided to keep it? Either way, I really like it. There's a lot of subtlety to cranking Monique with the Minnie on very low....:D

Thanks Jule. I've emailed fdeck about the HPF3, as well as cross posting on Dave Green's board, since he was tangentially involved in the development. I'll post more from a real computer tomorrow. Again, I don't think there is a problem, as much as I just want to understand how these are interacting in this way.

Same here.

Maybe I am easily confused (or I like the tone of Monique's output at full), but I find it easier to set volume on gigs on my power amp.

I have not ran it that way. I have only used power amps to run PA sound and it has been a habbit to run the amps full and control the output on the StudioLive. I will try this, seems that maxing Monique would have better results from the tube goodness.

I have used a CrownXTI and now am using a Carvin DCM2000.

I would like to know what you find out. I am using the Carvin now and the Crown had the built in DSP with HPF. So I am looking to find a good HPF.

Cool. Let me know if I can help.

Yes, the only truly unity gain electronic component regardless of impedance and level is a very short very big (about 1" thick) piece of wire.

Thank you for steering us in the right direction. It was a good thing to do.

My Monique is on this very journey right now - cant wait to get her back :hyper:

My new set-up with rackmount Monique going to effect return on Acoustic Image Focus 2R driving a Barefaced Super Twelve.
Sounds sweet! And the AI's channel 1 is available for my double bass, and channel 2 is ready for my Moog Taurus III. (For those rare occasions I need everything hooked up...)
