I ran Monique's XLR out to my Crest Poweramp for a couple of months (I don't tend to read manuals often;)) and it sounded great. Not optimal, but sounded perfectly fine.

I actually had a 3' XLR cable lying around, so I figured I would try it out.

What do you mean, "not optimal?" Was the tone just different? I know there is supposed to be a difference in tone between the line out and the XLR. Juledude said that he did not put a transformer in the line out and that is probably why the tone is different.

I didn't notice a huge difference tone-wise. Possibly lower volume, but my poweramp is pretty powerful.

Going thru the XLR rendered the line level control useless IIRC. Volume had to be adjusted from the back of the amp (dove cage) or via power amp. I think that s accurate. It has been a few months since I used XLR with Monique.

"Not Optimal" = "pain in the @$$" IME.

I have not used Monique to FOH yet. This weekend we are playing and the soundman wanted to know if the xlr was pre or post eq? I guess he is worried about too much output to his high dollar AVID board. I really don't want him hooking up the Radial. What's the deal to tell soundmen on this topic?

It may work (totally dependent on the amp input level), but it wasn't the original idea behind the XLR output. Monique's Balanced XLR Output was focused on going direct to the sound board at the venue, or in the studio. That is where we all need the balanced output to keep the noise out of long lines.

The level is much higher and amp ready on the Line Out. A while back the jack on the Line Output was changed to a TRS to accommodate good gear like the IP Bergantino, but the Line Output is still unbalanced (Single Ended).

No matter what level the Sound Person wants, Monique can give it. The Balanced Out Level is independent of the Line Out Level. (Both are bumped up if the Line Level Knob is pulled out, but that is another subject.)

Always start the session at full OFF (CCW) on the Balanced XLR Level Control and add level from there. That assures no damage to anything.

The direct answer to the pre/post EQ question is post EQ.

Even the direct answer may not really hit the point since the EQ is a Baxandall. Straight up with all three knobs is zero EQ. That means that the level and tone "pre" EQ is exactly the same as "post" EQ. What you put into a Baxandall EQ you get out "exactly" with all three knobs straight up.

A bit unusual, but kinda handy.

Thanks for the input. Is there any significant difference in tone between the line out and the XLR? By significant I mean anything that would be noticable in a live setting (i.e. not isolated in a studio and being dissected by an audio engineer :D).

I will be running it with a Carvin HD1500 and hopefully I can get my friend to sell me his Crown Microtech 1200. I know the Crown has a variable sensitivity from 0.775 to 1.4, but I'm not sure about the Carvin. It is a Class D amp, but I'm fairly sure the Monique would work fine with it.

I'm in the Sacramento area so hopefully I can come down and pick up the preamp when I buy it. I love Santa Cruz and the shipping is about as much as the gas down there...

There is no difference in tone. The XLR has a greatly reduced level so it can interface with recording consoles and PA bds.

There was a difference in the earlier models as described on the original site.

I use the line out for its excellent level and it leaves the XLR free for DI, live or studio.

I know that James uses a transformer I believe as a driver for the output section in his heads. Either way, it's before the output section, not an output transformer. What's more, I am not sure if he is using this transformer with the powered Monique.
