I've tried numerous times to like flats, still at least once a year I buy a set and put them on a P bass or a Jazz bass only to realize what I already know. They sound dead and lifeless.

As far as Tort guards, they are ok on a white or natural bass, but some folks think they go on everything. Your bass is neon green? Tort guard it is

Nice move! Off to a better sounding and looking P Bass IMO. You can always strap a rubber band to a chunk of wood in case you ever miss the flats on P Bass sound.

I don't care for flats (I'll play them when needed)
I hate tort
I feel that in most cases, actual Fenders are better than Squiers
I don't like P-basses (again, I'll play them when the situation calls)
I love 6 and 7-string basses
