This point is well taken. It's nice to hear that so many are vouching for the fact that he can be musical.

I have only heard people talk about his chops until now, and when I first checked out his site, I heard one over-the-top clip after another. So when I heard the link that started this thread, it just sounded like more of the same. My apologies for underestimating his talent.

my point was that, in my opinion, it seems as if folks feel there has arisen a dichotomy where folks either want to hear the so-called "song" oriented songs, which stylistically seem to be very musically and compositionally limited anymore, or else some folks want to hear the "cops" oriented songs, which often have very little to say outside of being vehicles for chops exhibitions.

i guess i miss the days when folks made more of an effort to marry good playing and good songs. that's not to say that there aren't those kinds of people now, but they don't seem to be as well known. seems like it used to be that you would know the great musicians in the magazines because not only were the some of the best musicians of their day, but they also played on the more popular songs. that doesn't seem to me to be the case anymore.

when he solo's fingerstyle - he just blows me away. he's very melodic and funky

i really wouldn't mind getting his videos (not on slapping)
