Yes and no. On the one hand, it's true that jazz tends to get played in smaller venues, because it can be. But on the other hand, the "market" for jazz takes advantage of the tendency for the music itself to be played at lower volume. A lot of venues don't care about jazz per se, but are looking for some pleasant entertainment. In my own case, it wouldn't really matter if I brought my bigger or smaller rigs (speakers with different sensitivity), but I like the tone quality of the smaller one, and would rarely need the capability of the bigger one. And the OP asked about need.
