Just one effect... which one?

Hm, good question. I really like my Boss TU-3 tuner. At the moment I don't use any other pedals, if you don't count the Singular Sound Beatbuddy that I use sometimes as a luxurious metronome and practice tool.

Is a multi cheating? What I actually bring to practices is a TC Electronic Bass Flyrig. Tuner, compressor, EQ, DI, overdrive, chorus, envelope filter, there's also an octave/fuzz but it doesn't track too well. Still worth it for the rest in a convenient package.

I think my first go-to pedal was the MXR M-80, which I actually got for free when the seller threw it in with an MIM P-bass I bought. Good EQ/DI/distortion at an affordable price.

i'm not a big pedal guy, but i think it would be my preamp pedal (mine's an ampeg): i get a different EQ on solos. (jazz type gigs with an instrumental horn band.) i don't use any pedals with the wedding/event band 0-2 solos, or for pickup gigs --- no matter the soloing.

I'm not a big pedal guy either, but the Empress Para EQ can do things you have to hear to actually believe.
You have to take the time to listen to how it's changed your tone, then, turn it off.
Then, you realize what it's done.

It has a long learning curve, at least it did for me, but it is so worth it. It treats most basses differently.
The settings I use for my Epi Jack Casady bass are very different from the settings I use on my Stingray.
And, this is the only EQ pedal that can actually tame my Stingray.
I can't say enough good things about this pedal, but sadly, it is no longer made.
Here's mine.

I could get by using a clip-on for tuning. And my EQ preferences could be dialed in from my onboard preamp, amplifier, or mixing board. With that, my single pedal would be the MarkBass Compressore. It's midrange character is very pleasing to my ears and has become part of what I consider "my sound." It even overdrives nicely with the gain set high and the threshold set low.
