Just one effect... which one?

Darkglass Hyper Luminal compressor pedal. Completely adaptable to any situation or genre, bringing out the absolute best of your playing and your bass. Three separate compressors, each with adjustable time, attack, and side chain filter....It's a must have for any serious bassist. If you don't have this one, get a decent compressor. Keeley is also a fine choice.

EHX Soul POG! My first pedal, and the one I use the most, as a non-pedal kind of guy. This is a dual-function unit. The Soul is an EHX pedal that brings sustain and a light distortion, along the lines of 70's-style jazz/R&B guitarists. The POG is an octave device that lets you mix true pitch, octave up and octave down, in variable proportions. There also is a toggle by which you can vary the order of operation between these two capabilities, which can be surprisingly effective. I bought this pedal because we had a few gigs that our regular lead guitarist could not cover, and we did not have time to teach the tunes (non-standard book, with a lot of originals) to someone, so I got this pedal to cover some of his solos - and discovered my inner Carlos Santana! That was mostly octave up, with medium-strong fuzz, and while the octave function is digital, it tracks pretty well - certainly well enough for my chops! I've since experimented with other voicings, a few of which yield that cool, reedy sound that a lot of Jazz organists pulled out of the Hammond B-3 in the 50's and 60's. I have not used this pedal since Covid struck, but writing about it, now, makes me want to whip it out when I practice tonight!

I’m thinking about adding a pedal to my sound and I’ve never had one. If you could only have one pedal which one would it be or what would you recommend as a first pedal?
Thanks for your input
Overdrive. I use the darkglass microtubes x and dig it. But if I was limited to one pedal I might opt for one of its big brothers the x7 or x ultra just for a little more flexibility. It’s not really the most “fun” effect imo but it’s very usable. With my band I have my drive on more than any other pedal by far.
