Just one effect... which one?

First one I ever bought maybe 20 years ago, still use it

EHX Soul POG! My first pedal, and the one I use the most, as a non-pedal kind of guy. This is a dual-function unit. The Soul is an EHX pedal that brings sustain and a light distortion, along the lines of 70's-style jazz/R&B guitarists. The POG is an octave device that lets you mix true pitch, octave up and octave down, in variable proportions. There also is a toggle by which you can vary the order of operation between these two capabilities, which can be surprisingly effective. I bought this pedal because we had a few gigs that our regular lead guitarist could not cover, and we did not have time to teach the tunes (non-standard book, with a lot of originals) to someone, so I got this pedal to cover some of his solos - and discovered my inner Carlos Santana! That was mostly octave up, with medium-strong fuzz, and while the octave function is digital, it tracks pretty well - certainly well enough for my chops! I've since experimented with other voicings, a few of which yield that cool, reedy sound that a lot of Jazz organists pulled out of the Hammond B-3 in the 50's and 60's. I have not used this pedal since Covid struck, but writing about it, now, makes me want to whip it out when I practice tonight!
I had no idea this was a thing.
Now that I do, it's on my want list.

If we can go back to the original premise of the OP for a moment I would install a TC Electronic Sub'N'Up Mini in my bass, set as an always on fixed setting 1 octave up effect, to get an effect similar to that of an 8 string bass, and then as my 1 external pedal bring a Zoom B1 Four digital multi effect, which us actually slightly smaller than the size of 2 standard Boss pedals, so assume it would just go, where I would use the 5 effects you are able to use with this unit, like this, 1st slot I would use for one of the compressor models, set fairly subtly, just to add some additional snap and punch without really affecting my playing dynamics much, 2nd slot I would use for the 1 band fully parametric bass equalizer model, 3rd slot I would use for the 7 band graphic equalizer, that basically is an emulation of the Boss bass one, 4th slot then the plate reverb model set very subtle, and finally for the 5th and final slot either the LPF model or one of the bass cabinet models, depending in which I could get closest to my desired direct ampless tone with.

If this is considered cheating I guess just a TC Electronic Sub'N'Up Mini.

Edit: To make this simpler.

You are travelling with very limited space and can only carry one effects pedal, limited to something of a size similar to regular Boss pedal or a little larger (no huge pedals, or multieffects with screens etc.).

Which effect do you take?

Easy. The Boss GT-1000Core, if I can only have one pedal.

If it really has to be BOSS sized, Spectrum or C4. Personally I'd prefer shooting the person who made up that stupid rule ;-) well maybe not shooting... spiking their hot chocolate with an OD of Ex-Lax might suffice...

larger and only one I'd be torn between the Future Impact and a small midi switcher or an HX Stomp. I do love my synths though...
