JUST ORDERED A SEI 7 !!

Over on another bass forum, there are quite a few people getting builds by John Shuker. 4,5 and 7 strings have been built and displayed. Now I'm not knocking Mr.Shuker who does a great job, but in my opinion (and this is only my opinion) there is no way a Shuker is better than a Sei !! I'd rather wait what looks like 11 months for a Sei than 4 months for a Shuker. Saying that I would rather wait 11 months for a Sei than for ANY other bass builder.

<my 2p>
I think that's a little unfair dude.
The guys at Shuker can turn out relatively stock bolt-on instruments in about 4 months given that parts and woods are readily available for about half the price of most Sei basses, however neck through and extensively customised instruments can take well over 11 months and cost as much as you're willing to throw at it, just like Sei basses.

I'm not saying that Shukers are any better than Sei, but what's better or worse is entirely subjective and I don't think that throwing stuff like that around is all that fair, unless you've played both.
I have, and I couldn't really see, feel or hear a huge difference between similarly priced Shukers and Seis, and any other manufacturers for that matter, in most cases, £2000 gets you £2000 of customised bass.

Cheers,
Eude

It’s a little unfair that 3 lines of a post which I made a couple of weeks or so ago get taken out of context !!

Toasted has decided to quote and agree with the 3 lines and you have based your reply on his post.

I would encourage you to go back in this thread and read the whole section including my 6 paragraph reply (from which the 3 lines were taken) at post #180. We were discussing customer service and lead times at the time. You might find that it was far from the ‘Shuker bashing’ you may think it is.

On another note, I too hope that Martin does not “do a Paddy” !!

7 String

How many days till Martin gets back. I am suprised you don't have a clock running down in your sig., to show us the exact minute he returns. ;)

Joking aside, I do feel for you the last couple of weeks are a real killer. Still 'all good things come to those that wait'

Regards

Matthew

ps. I have to pop up to the Gallery soon so I might try and coincide it with the completion of your bass. :bassist:

Martin should be back at The Gallery on the 26th, so I'll call him in 211 hours or so :D

I'm keeping myself busy, which is helping a lot :)

Be cool of we could meet up on collection day, the more the merrier. No doubt there's somewhere local where we can have a celebration pint afterwards !!

that is the worst custom order i have ever heard. but if you like it, than you like it.

you are gonna be :( when you first open the case.
LOL,
why does everyone crack on purple or pink basses ?
aren't there enough sunburst, black and natural wood basses in this world?

and and isn't that the point of going custom?..getting something that relects your individual tastes?

I say, if you're gonna go custom, you may as well order features that aren't regularly available.
I think that's gonna be incredible!

I'm thinking of getting purple and green side led's on my FBB..
wave your freak flag high,bro!..

Mike - Thanks for taking the time to take pics, but also for taking the time to read through this thread, notice what was written before and take them back off again :D

I was in two minds whether to see photos before I go down and collect it, but after discussing it with Martin and my better half, I decided just to wait until the day itself !!

Saying that, if you (or others who saw the pics) would like to type your thoughts on what you saw that would be great (and also it wouldn't be cheating !!).

So how did you like the lacewood ??!!

Quadrogong - Geez, that's an old quote !! Originally I was going with a purple dye finish, but when I saw the wood it just screamed 'gloss' !! If you have a look at the last set of pics, some of the body has thinners on it which gives the impression of what the final colour would be. I hope you agree that the pink veneer is very subtle :D

I do think that if someone orders a custom bass then they should have any colour combination they choose. However, this is a forum so people can voice their opinions.

I definately don't think that I'll be disappointed when I open the case :hyper:

Hey - I'm really glad that I managed to get those pics off before you saw them dude - I'd have felt bad if I;d ruined the whole experience for you :(

On the other hand - having seen it close up - the Lacewood top has come out amazing - it's absolutely gorgeous and you will SO pleased with it - I don't want to make your anticipation get even more out of control - but I can assure you the bass is looking so hot, the highly-figured maple on the board as well looks wonderful - and the workmanship is faultless... needless to say I'm sure it will play and feel and sound fantastic too.

Just hang in there - and do PM me if you fancy meeting up on collection day - I'd love to see the finished bass too.

Take care and take it easy if you can - not long now!

Mike

In my opinion that is the best bit of lacewood [see Paddy got it right this time:smug: ] that I have ever seen. The consistancy of the figuring across the whole peice is stunning, but you know that already as you chose it.

You know its a pity that the pickup and bridge will hide some of it, but your decision not to have any controls except volume will I think be totally justified as again they would have got in the way of the wood. Now more will be on view :hyper:

Do let me know when you will be picking it up so I can see if I can arrange a trip to the smoke.

Regards

Matthew

Oh I don't know - it all looks pretty average to me :ninja: :hiding: :ninja:

Just kidding - for the 2 seconds I saw the pics - it's totally killer. Having seen the fingerboard in the flesh I know just how good it looks. Really digging the lacewood - looks great, it's darker than the rendering you've got.

This is going to be awesome :hyper:  :hyper:  :hyper:

I feel an owners club convention coming on at 7's pickup...

Spoke to Martin this afternoon...

We're aiming for a collection date of 16th March:hyper:

This isn't carved in stone though. Martin's got a lot of work on, including some very large repair jobs. Also, he's got to wait for the compartment covers to come back as well. It seems as if something big happened to the finishing guys, which has caused immense delays...

So what I've said to Martin is that Jen & I are coming down to London anyway on the 15th, primarily because Jen is getting my Grandma'a engagement ring :D If the bass is ready, then fantastic, if it's not I'll go and see it anyway and plan a v.cheap plane down/train back to finally collect it. :hyper:

I know that Martin is really busy and I don't want to put more pressure on him and tie him to a date. Geez, I've waited nearly 11 months already, a couple more weeks aren't going to hurt :)

Lucky I've got plenty of Open University work to do before I journey 'daaan sssaaaaarrrfff' :bassist:

As previously arranged, I called Martin today to see the state of play with my new baby.

All is well. The compartment covers are arranged, just final things to do such as the signature inlay and wiring. The bass has been settling in after being strung up with a set of DR's based around a 40-100 set.

As Martin is really busy, I have offered to collect the bass on Monday if necessary, so this looks like the probable collection day. My next call to him is Friday morning...

So close now.....:bassist:
