JUST ORDERED A SEI 7 !!

OK, so the deed has been done !!

After literally a 5 minute phone call this afternoon, my Sei 7 will have a balanced DI XLR out on it as well.

Saw this idea on a thread about an Overwater bass in the last couple of days and it seemed a good idea. With space at a premium in my home studio, this is going to save me digging out my head just to use the DI !!

So thanks again to Matthew on the Sei Owners Club thread for his help !!

Excellent news on the DI. If it is a Wal socket like mine then you will need to ensure that if you are using the XLR part, you plug in a lead into the jack socket as well to activate the whole thing.

I cut down an old lead [about 6" long] and use that. It is also worth remembering that the XLR on it's own won't drain your batteries [if you have any] so you can just remove the short jack lead and leave the XLR in. I found that removing the jack in this manner did not create the normal bang through the amp or p.a so it was a useful way to mute the bass quietly between sets etc and saving batteries.

Thanks for the info Matthew. Having this DI is going to be real handy and enable me to record the bass parts, or just put down new ideas, quickly and easily !!

I've read that Neutrik and Planet Waves have some new cables out which don't make that uncomfortable thump when it's unplugged. Apparently, there's a little reed switch in one of the ends which makes it all nice and quiet (I think that Neutrik actually call them silent jacks).

PS. Does anyone know any good lullabies for Paddy !!

there is a band that i have been going to see with my dad for as long as i can remember and the Keyboard player made a whole load of cables like that way back in the early 90s, i wonder if he sold the idea or what...? il have to ask him next time i see him

I'm going to speak to Martin on Monday and then book suitable transportation !!

Probably plane down and train back. There's NO WAY that the bass is going into Ryanair's cargo hold. Last time I saw Martin I found that my train ticket for the way back was in 1st Class and it was only £30 or so. Got my breakfast and lunch on board with lots of tea and a small bottle of red wine included !!

I'm trying not to get too anxious at the moment, but I'm sure as heck excited :hyper: No pics this time :ninja: , it's going to be a total surprise :hiding:

This last bit of waiting has been dang painful. I've often laid awake at night worrying that the pickup is in the right place (and driving Jen mad in the process !!). It will be, it's been measured !! But all these little thoughts go through your head as the finish line approaches and you think of the huge bundle of cash you will hand over !!

I have not really stopped thinking about my new Sei since I ordered it, so goodness knows what I am going to be like when mine gets to the same stage as yours...:rollno: :rollno:

Remember, let me know when you are going to be collecting it and I will try and drop by and see you...mine should hopefully be about ready to go to the finishers by then (;)).

No problem. This last bit has been the worst part. I've been getting increasingly anxious since the bass went to the finishers. You name it, I've thought about it !! String spacing, pickup placement, electronics...the list has been never-ending.

I think it's just because you think about what has brought you to this point. The endless hours of practice.....the trailing through brochures finding exactly which bass you want...getting the spec for your Sei together...Woods, electronics, hardware... meeting to put the spec together and giving the green light to the build.....seeing the materials from which the instrument will be created...

All these things then churn over in your head as you near the final result. I've been watching an American TV programme called "Overhaulin'" in which they take someone's car, take it completely apart and them present them with their rejuvenated ride. I'm feeling how they must feel before the big reveal, knowing roughly the shape of it, but just not knowing exactly what is going to be like !! :hiding:

I'll keep you posted as to the 'release date' !!

OK, latest news...

After speaking to Martin this morning, it appears that my bass is not back from the finishers yet. Alex must have got my bass mixed up with someone else's !!

It's possible that the bass will be ready for 2nd March, if it comes back from the finishers in the next couple of weeks. Apparently, the finishers have had some bad problems over the Christmas/New Year period which has put them a little behind.

Still not really worried about this. I've mentioned March 2 as a relative has some rail tickets for that date and has said that we can buy them off him if we need to collect the bass.

Tell you what, i've been waiting an absolute age and Alex keeps telling me my new bass still isn't back from the finishers yet !!! It's killing me ....

This is my third Sei, a 70's Jazz-a-like .... vintage white, rosewood neck & blocks, East pre-amp etc.

One thing though, i've been a bit disappointed in the level of response from Alex & Martin about my bass. I spend more than £2K on a bass and when I ask how things are going, I get short, abrupt emails saying "no news" or similar. I'd asked for quick photo updates but again got nothing.

That's nearly 8 months waiting, for a standard bolt-on 5 string Jazz which is a bit steep in my books. I'd have thought these were quick turnaround basses that keeps the business going. Jon Shuker quotes 8-12 weeks !

I love my Sei basses, but I think this is going to be my last (at least for a while) as i'm disappointed in the customer service this time around.

Hope Mr Petersen isn't going down the Wal route and taking too much work on, and sacrificing customer service because of it.

I know what you mean - the feedback can be a little frustrating sometimes.

I know nothing about Shuker's but 12 weeks is very fast, he must build the parts separate to the oredr and put them together once the order comes in? Martin builds everything to the order. Did that make sense?

I know they are very, very busy at the moment. I think Martin isn't keen on sending out photos until the project gets to a certain state.

I got the advantage in that I can be there in an hour so I can pop in and take a look.

And if you got a Sei, why you not in the Owners Club - (check the sig)?

No more questions now...

I can fully understand the customer service point of view. I know that they're very busy at the moment, but saying that the bass is back from the finishers and then finding out it's not is a bit disappointing and I put it down to a simple mistake on Alex's part. If he was in any doubt as to what basses were/were not back from the finishers, he should take a number or an e-mail address, have a look and get back to me later on...

Saying that though, there hasn't been an awful lot of communication as there hasn't been a lot to say. Everything's written down and was finalised on my last visit at the beginning of December. I know that Martin won't keep me waiting any longer than necessary and will call when he needs to...and I think that's the point here. He only calls if he needs to. I'm always conscious of the fact that if I call in, that takes him away from building and if everybody called in a significant part of the day would be taken up answering calls instead of building instruments.

Ironically, The Gallery have an order for a custom build from the USA which was paid for in full when the order was placed. Every time they call to see how it's getting on they are met by secretaries with a plethora of excuses. They can't even speak to the builders themselves.

Over on another bass forum, there are quite a few people getting builds by John Shuker. 4,5 and 7 strings have been built and displayed. Now I'm not knocking Mr.Shuker who does a great job, but in my opinion (and this is only my opinion) there is no way a Shuker is better than a Sei !! I'd rather wait what looks like 11 months for a Sei than 4 months for a Shuker. Saying that I would rather wait 11 months for a Sei than for ANY other bass builder.

Personally, I would have liked more photos of the build (luckily for me Paddy was generous enough to go and get some for me) and a call every now and again to say what was happening, even if it was to say that no progress had been made for whatever reason.

However, I can put up with the lack of calls as the quality of the end product is second-to-none.
