JUST ORDERED A SEI 7 !!

The way he seems to work is, you'll very quickly have a neck blank and a body shape - you'll see it and be utterly impressed. Then you'll see it again a few months later and it'll be exactly the same, possibly with a fingerboard, and you'll worry that not much has been done. Then, finally, the rest all happens really quickly, and before you know it, you'll have your new beastie! But that's how Martin works!

Going to finally get him going on my next Sei within the next couple of months... it's going to be a sixer. :D

Sounds about right - apparently my fingerboard is done and the LEDs have been put in. The facings have also been cut and glued. That's about as much as I know at the moment - dying to see some photos though :crying:

XO - you gonna go with the Flam offset like you thought and are you gonna go with another whammy?

Not 100% yet. Either I'm going to go with piezos in an ABM bridge, or a Kahler 6-string trem bridge. Either way, it'll be the offset Flamboyant shape, wenge and buckeye, EMGs and the U-Retro again. I love the tone I get out of the wenge/buckeye combination on my 5.

First things first though, I need to get a new amp! Since I got back to the UK, I'm amp-less again... Then Martin gets my deposit!

I have :p - check out the Custom Bass Support Group.

Hey Matthew - hope all is well with you. How you getting on with that baby Sei of yours. 3 months in and no photos yet for me - my patience is wearing out :help: Also still haven't made decisions about my electronics.

7 String - If you want some reading to keep you going check out Matthew's build thread on his 7 string Sei Matthews Build Thread. It convinced me to "Pull the trigger". I think XO's got a build thread somewhere as well.

Later

Yeah, I've had a read through of both threads. Matthew's been kind enough to send me pics of his 7 string fretted and that really made me bust a gut to get the bass off the ground !!

....and you're another happy Sei customer....

Yup, I thought I was being a little original with the lacewood thing.

Then I find this Conklin 10 string.... topped with... LACEWOOD !!!

Shows how good this wood can look though !!

The bass belongs to Stewart Mckinsey and he was kind enough to give me a breakdown.

" well, the top and headstock cap were lacewood. the body wings were royal paulownia. the neck was maple and purpleheart. the fretboard was bubinga. that was a spectacular bass. "

...and my bass which started the lacewood fetish !!

Congrats on your order! I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result.

I don't get to the Gallery too often (bit out of the way to just go browsing), but I'll look out for it next time I go.

My current favourite Sei design is the guitar/bass hybrid Martin build for Pino Palladino (he's since built a left version for a customer in the States):

Did any of the Gallery regulars see this during construction? I'd be interested to know what Martin charged for something so different to his usual models.

Martin pulled one of those hybrids out for me to look at - IIRC it was going to Pino. It's a gorgeous looking animal but I wouldn't know what to do with it

Don't know how much they cost though.

7 String - Those lacewood pics are very nice, only 7 months 3 weeks to see how yours turns out :p

Just to keep this thread totally up-to-date !!

I had a great telephone chat with Martin yesterday, went through some more details and a revised costing since I dropped the fanned fret idea I initially had.

Well, me being me, the money which was going to be spent on fanned frets is now going to equip the bass with LED's. Yup, the side dots, my sig and the sei logo at the top will all be lit up. Colour: purple (OK, it does say violet).

Martin's going to give ABM a call to see if they do hardware in a nickel finish, kinda satin-finished chrome...

The bass' colour is going to be influence by the lacewood, how it takes the dye and so on, so Martin wants samples of colour.

So, I'm going to jump a train on Monday morning and go and see Martin on Tuesday afternoon. Be great to see the lacewood and go over the small print and get everything written down.

I'll update when I get back...!!!

LEDs are going to be cool.

Why have you gone away from the fan frets? Just wondering whats made you change your mind.

I'm going up to see the boys next week to finally make some decisions on the electronics. What time you going to be there on Tuesday - could possibly get there for a meetup if you fancy?

I changed my mind about the fanned fret thing as I haven't played fanned fretted bass and I'm so used to the 34" scale of my Conklin. I decided that this was not the time to experiment !!
