Kala UBass Megathread, Part 4

Planet Waves Capo PW-CP-06 for Banjo, Mandolin etc.

I used this idea tonight with very good results.
See post #241 in this thread for the photos.

My two-week old Thunderguts were getting too many wraps on the pegs.
A capo at the second fret let me clamp tension on a string, then quickly and easily unwind, re-wrap, and re-tune.

Thanks, bluecab, for sharing an excellent suggestion.

for future reference I bought this off the bay simply because of what was avaliable and what was reasonably cheap and what looked cool. Unfortunately there is not enough room for the body of the u-bass to fit into the holder, I guess regular ukes have skinnier bodies. So if it helps - don't buy this one. I do suspect it may hold a regular solidbody bass. Looks like I'll just have to go into my local shop.

This one works good for me, perfect size for the Ubass and the lead can stay plugged in (just barely).

Yeah went to my local shop. They had 3 stands that fit it. There are 5 guys working there just standing around chatting, I have to go to them. The closer I get the more they avoid eye contact, I'm the only customer in the store. One realises he has to serve the customer. He takes me over and hands me one and says this will do. I ask to put my bass on it, and the others, and I want to know how small they fold up and how easy they fold up. One is described as "a new model and costs $50, you wont want it" when asked how it folds up he says "I don't know". After 30 seconds he says he has other stuff to do and to let him know which one I've picked. So I sit the bass on each one and decide to go with an acoustic guitar A frame so I can use it for my acoustic guitar too.

This is why I buy off the internet!

Taking my fretted hog, 6 string custom singlecut, Bongo 5HH and home made banjo bass made from scrap parts to the Australian gtg in Sydney tomorrow. A motley assortment of basses for sure.

Sounds like Guitar Center.

Against many strong recommendations here to buy a fretless U-Bass, I went with my gut and ordered a Hutch Hutchinson model today. I got a great price from Sweetwater.

I've been playing for months on a friend's fretted mahogany and decided I'd rather deal with a few fret squawks than pitch issues while sightreading Jazz charts. If it becomes unbearable, I'll have the frets pulled and make it a fretless and have the side dots where I prefer them to be.

I also wanted the extra access to the upper frets, even though it's a small difference. I plan on trying it with Thunderguts and Pyramids in addition to the Pahoehoes.

I'm not a fan of buying instruments I can't play first, but with all the glowing comments about Kala's customer service, I figure that if I have a significant issue, I'll be taken care of.

It'll be a week or so before it arrives. I'll give you the rundown once I've had time to explore.

I guess I might as well go ahead and order an F-deck HPF pre since it seems inevitable.

Back from the Aussie gtg in Sydney. Took my fretted hog, lotta guys playing it and impressed. Was able to compare it to a spruce fretless that was there. Have to agree with dougness there, I get my music about 40 minutes before play time so I'm watching those charts quite carefully at times. The fretless confirmed what I suspected. I'm much better at the fretted and the mahogany top looks much better than the spruce.

OK ok I am probably putting my head in the lions mouth here - but.... I am just wondering what experience people may have with the Rlizard Bass Uklelele from Ortega? Seems to have an inbuilt tuner and volume and tone controls which is of interest - but wondering what does it play like in comparison to the U ? Seems also to retail at the same price ....but no reviews as far as I can see?

Haven't seen these before and was looking a while ago. Looks very nice with tuner and preamp as well. Still a few hundred more expensive than the kala. Still only 4 strings. I guess it was only a matter of time before someone noticed how many u-basses were being sold and decided to try their luck.
Only a small detail but I don't like those lizards at all. A bit folk-art for my liking.
I do wonder what they sound like.

I am actually quite upset with Kala´s service.

I have purchased a new Kala U-Bass via Golihur music, and now after just a few days playing, the E-strings sounds distorted. There must be something wrong with the pickup, I get the distortion with different cables, cabs and amps.

The guys at Golihur told me to send a mail to Kala. That was two weeks ago. Not even a reply.
