AJ was probably using his famous detuned Jazz.
This album is all Freddie Washington on his Ken Smith except one track with AJ on his Fodera.
Despite playing bass in high school jazz band in the mid 90’s, I never really checked him out lol. Thank you. This one’s on the docket.
Ricky Showalter with Liquid Soul - some all-time great Chicago acid jazz. I saw them several times, Ricky played a 5 string Smith through a big Mesa-Boogie rig and just ruled.
Not sure if it's a Smith on the actual track, but white boy is rocking what looks to be a 6 in the music video! Great tune.
Fred Hammond (famous gospel artist and renowned bass player) used to always alternate between his Smith and his jazz bass on his studio albums. In this song in particular (from the "In Case You Missed It... and Then Some" album), he is playing his Smith and it sounds glorious!
He looks to be around 30ish, I don't know that I would call him a boy..
You beat me to it. The first three Liquid Soul records are 100% Smith. He's a monster player!

I have it on CD, but I have not listened to it in a few years. I remember it being a good album.
For at least Al's first three or four studio albums, yes, AJ was using his 4-string Jazz Bass. But on Al's Tour De Force - Live album from 1982 AJ is pictured in the liner notes playing a Ken Smith bass.
I could never figure out whether that song has no chorus or no verse…
