Ken Smith Pics Thread???

Cheers!!!

Great playing!!

Nice feel and nice tone.

Thanks Mike (and steve and paul and JHL). I'll take credit for the feel, but the tone is mostly thanks to Ken Smith. :D

And the Aguilar DB900 tube DI deserves some love too.

Not too tough to swing when somebody the calibre of Joel Rosenblatt is behind the kit. ;)

Bernie, did you get those pics from the G Guitars site?

Here's a pic of my old MD7, which is the nicest bass I've ever seen or owned.

Here's a a link to a vid of me playing it.

Hey Craig,

Yeah, I snagged those from G Guitars. That's the MD7 that belongs to D.A.R.K. now I believe.

Your MD7 was a beauty and the tone was insane. I love that clip. Great paying, bro.

+1 I can tell you have a nice DI. Very buttery. I must also say that Joel is a KILLER drummer. You're right, unless you were totally square it would be hard not to groove with him. Very impressive drumming!

It's crazy how different a high end bass sounds when you are playing with a group as opposed to alone. I've always had an issue with the sterilness of Ken Smith basses (and Alembic, Modulus, MTD, etc.). I have an Alembic with the same type of tone (A/B'd them at a local shop, crazy similarity). When I got into a group stiuation it seemed to take on this amazing, driving tone, then I realized that the sterilness is not there anymore. High end basses like these are made to meld into any mix and fit any style of music and meld they do. Crazy stuff. Great tone by the way.

Thanks fellas. :o

Unfortunately the high res photos are no longer available on the site, but here at G Guitars "recently sold" Ken Smith page http://gguitars.com/kensmithsold.html my current BSR6EG is pictured fourth from the top. The quality figuring of the maple top is very similar to my "old" MD7...so much so I suspect they were cut from the same piece of wood.

These Ken Smith are very impressive looking basses, and I imagine equally nice sounding.. I'd like to find a good deal of a 4 string.. Any ideas of where to look (OTHER THAN EBAY)? Is there a dealer who keeps a good inventory?

That is easily one of the best recorded tones i have ever heard. I really wish they balanced on me better standing up. :(

I've just seen that vid... terrific playing - I love that! :bassist:

What a lovely tone too... what were your settings for that take? Did you use the onboard EQ or did you leave everything flat? Was pickup pan at the center or did you favor one of the pickups?

Hey Mike, any photos of the latest Smith? That was the best playing (to my hands) and best sounding (to my ears) Smith that I have encountered. Very, very nice bass!

Tom.

Here ya be!!

It is a killer playing, sounding bass.
Completly under-rated IMO.

Thanks Ari.

Pickups are dead center (both full on), mid is cut just a tad and bass and treble both boosted just a tad.

It was recorded direct to ProTools via my "secret weapon"...an Aguilar DB900 tube DI. I brought it to the studio myself, and the guys flipped over it. So much so they wouldn't let me take it home (we bartered studio time :) ) and they now use it for all their sessions.

That is a pretty raw mix that was synched with the video. I'm sure they did a bit of mixing/eq/compression via plugins...but I haven't a clue which ones.

That tune is now mixed and ready for mastering with some pretty significant changes. The midi track of the keyboard was totally messed up in ProTools. The existing piano sound was pretty cheesy and it was our intent to replace it with some killer piano plugin, but we were screwed. Our solution was to remote record Jonathan's (pianist) own Kawai baby grand at his house in his living room. The result was fantastic, and we ended up retracking piano on four tunes. Turned out to be a very happy "disaster". :D

Oh...and one more thing regarding tone. I gotta (not so) humbly take some credit for that. I have a very light touch, which I think you can actually see when there's a closeup of my left hand in the vid.

Of course, the Smith's fantastic tone and especially feel allow me to utilize that light touch.

Every Smith bass I've ever owned or played has felt like it was made specifically for my hands.
