Ken Smith Pics Thread???

DSCF0232.gif

Here are my three for what its worth and close ups are available on request.

(L-R): 2005 BSR5-GN fretless (maple core + walnut top), 2003 BSR6-GN (black walnut core + maple top), 2002 BSR5-GN (maple top + mahogany core).

I've just recently acquired the fretless from Evan at BassNorthWest and imported it to the UK.

Big smiles when I plugged that sucker in, as I had to make a huge leap of faith before ordering it. I'm thrilled that it has as much punch and sustain as my Pentabuzz but without the singing overtones (which can be a little too much for some songs) and more warmth. Now I've got my Pedulla MVP5, and two Modulus Q5SS up for sale to mitigate the financial damage and fund a couple of neo cabs :)

That's the MD7 that belongs to D.A.R.K. now I believe.

why yes it is....
funny i never saw this thread, it's from right around when i found the bass and was researching quite a bit.
this instrument is truly amazing in sound and playability.
i've been working with different internal dip switch combinations in the pre and every single setting i've tried has merit. not a bad sound in it.
great playing, btw mr. Garfinckel....inspiring!
guess i'll add these:

My current stable:

1995 CR6G Fretless
Highly Figured Flame Maple/Mahogany Core
Smith Lacquer Finish
Strings: Ken Smith Burners Medium Tapered
(Open sound with lots of punch on rear pickup)

1997 BSR6GN Fretted
Highly Figured Tiger Maple/Mahogany Core
Smith Lacquer Finish
Strings: DM SR-2000ML's or Fodera Diamond SS 28-120
(Open sound with plenty of clarity for chords/solo)

And now will be traveling together in style thanks to the Double Leather Gig Bag on it's way from Brian at the LowEnd.
Thanks again Mr. B!:bassist:

Congratulations indeed!:hyper:
Excellent wood choices and as with all Smith's, the proof of the pudding is in the playing! Welcome to the club.
I haven't had G.A.S. since acquiring my current pair.

One piece if advice though, pony up and experiment with strings. The clarity of the Smith P/U's allows for some major changes depending on string type and gauge.:bassist:

P.S. Don't worry about recutting the bridge or nut as long as the variations are not too wild.
Ken recommends this but he's a perfectionist (the reason his instruments rock!) and I've had no problems moving between gauges, tapered etc... with proper set up adjustments. Having said that, I DO recommend sticking with a tapered B string when possible.

Enjoy!

Thanks a bunch. This is my third Smith.....I still have my 1985 BT Custom that I bought new....it is kind of retired though.

Strings- you are correct. It came with Smith's stainless. I've switched out to DR Sunbeam nickels. I'm not a fan of stainless.....it seems odd to me to take an instrument like this and put stainless on which feels gritty...on an otherwise, wonderful feeling instrument.

Strings are definitely a personal thing but I like the sound of stainless steel strings and I use GK amps with my Smiths. I like to hear some firmness in the upper midrange. The 'thup' that comes from my fingers releasing the string.

This has been lacking with the SWR and Eden hybrid amps I've used in the past with Smiths. Not dissing SWR or Eden BTW, those amps sound great to me with other basses.

I hear you.....excuse the pun. There is an attack and clarity with stainless that goes well with Smith basses. I find though that with I get that clarity with a little more warmth and MUCH better feel with my DR's. Man, to your point though, there is a great slap tone that comes with stainless on a Smith.

My first Smith has had to go through two, complete re-frets though. It was my main bass on a full-time gig that called for mostly slap style. The string I used was Dean Markley Blue Steels...which are stainless. Man, they ate my frets.

I almost inhaled some wine while reading that. Really though, if you want more seperation in your ab muscles, that crotch walnut works alot better!!

Does this mean you're back in the woodshed after all these years?:bassist:
