Does URB = Jazz?

I actually enjoy E-bass in my Jazz. I think that the URB does not sound good on most of the recordings I've heard. One album that comes to mind is "Kind of Blue".

I know, I know... I don't blame you for thinking that. It's not a very popular opinion considering that "Kind of Blue" is one of the top selling jazz albums of all-time. However, I just don't think the bass sounds good on that session. It's boomy and muffled. Maybe it sounded better on the audio gear back then.

I was talking to a close friend (a trumpet player) and told him how I felt. He said that Kind of Blue was recorded in a church. That kind of backs up the bass sounding too boomy and undefined.

This is my opinion however unpopular it may be.

You might be asking yourself, "Well, what does he consider to be good?". I favor the sound of Eddie Gomez on the album "You Must Believe In Spring" by Bill Evans. Also, Brian Bromberg & Christian McBride come through nice and clear on URB.

Hmmmm... Paul Chambers on a P-Bass. Interesting.

I hear what you're saying. My opinion comes from my frustration when I listen to Kind of Blue. I do think that Paul Chamber sounds great on Garland of Red.

It's not Mr. Chambers, it's not the bass, it's the recording (IMO).

So you just don't like gut strings? Makes much more sense. Oh, and I can play better than jaco with a two string squire pbass out of a bass pack, I wrote teen town before I was born, and Victor Wooted sucks.:hiding:

I guess I don't dig the gut string thing. I'm going to assume that Gomez and Bromberg are non-gut string players. I didn't even think about Chambers using gut strings. Did they even make steel strings back then? Gosh, there is so much that I don't know... :hiding:

about the elevator question involving tesh yanni and kenny g...as long as they are instrumentless it couldnt be too bad....but anyways...tesh would be safe due to his appearances on conan obrien and the old nba theme song. i would just wait until yannii and kenny g were standing close to oen another and find the right angle...

You would shoot out the control panel of the elevator, and then climb out the access door in the ceiling, leaving Yanni, Tesh, and Kenny stranded in the defunct elevator, listening to elevator music for all eternity. Which, unfortunately, they would all enjoy immensely. Eventually, Yanni would succumb to his old ways, and beat the crap out of Tesh and Kenny G.

Or something like that.

Sorry to derail the thread....Upon further testing and strenuous lab testing, it was found that Kenny G does indeed suck. He can keep his lips wrapped around a saxaphone for a long amount of time though, and that must be worth something in certain communities.
