Fleetwood Mac managed to !! "Rumours" was created during a time they could barely deal with each other

but I get it. for most of us, this is a hobby. fun. when it becomes toxic, "fun" goes out the window
I agree, there are always exceptions. A singer I knew who was in a really popular 80's band told me that the drummer and guitar player refused to be on stage at the same time for sound checks. When they performed you'd never know, but the minute they were off stage, they'd go in opposite directions.

For we mere mortals though, ...

Yeah, we had been recording into Logic Pro, mic’ed guitar amps, direct bass, full mics on drums so we could review everything. We had been building a set list and were up to six passable tunes. There were signs of steady progress so I don’t know why the rant had to happen. we were all in that room. We all could hear the tapes. A couple more weeks and we would have had a full set.

So this might be it. I’m going to let the dust settle til I can see more clearly.

Good idea.

Guitarist #1 should really take this to heart: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference".

Yeah, but it was strait out financial reasons that kept them together if I remember right. Didn't the manager own the name or something and threaten to fire the lot of them and form a new Fleetwood Mac? Apart from Fleetwood and McVie there weren't any other original members.

no, at the time they were recording Rumours, they weren't poor. They had a big hit on the previous album (Rhiannon).

and whether there were only 2 original members at that point? Not relevant at all. The original formation of FM led by Peter Green were never big stars and was a totally different band (started as British blues band) after Nicks and Buckingham joined (became a West Coast-based, pop and rock band). it wasn't the same thing at all. you might as well have changed the name.

I think the point was that they were already pop hits and despite the fact that two couples in the band were in the midst of breakup/divorce during the recording of Rumours, and Buckingham was having frequent arguments with John McVie as well, is that they still found a way to "make it work" and recorded one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Even if you don't like each other. Especially when you have something snappy. That was the point. You don't have to love each other and be "besties" to have a great band.

but it sure helps. especially when you're just you're typical local cover or original band. The "hang" is important to me because "stardom" and big money is not a possibility at my age.

anyway my point was that the absolute that a great band cannot exist when you have extreme drama was overstated. it absolutely can - Aerosmith is another example of a band that the two main players really hated each other, but toured year after year. Still do.

but I don't deal with drama and I won't play with people I can't stand any longer

Yes, you are right, I miss remembered the incident. It was actually in 1974, when the then Fleetwood Mac members went their separate ways and their manager Clive Davis, having tour dates booked, claimed he owned the name and put together a band, under the name The New Fleetwood Mac. The tour ended up being canceled mid way through. It took four years of legal disputes to resolve the name issue and for Fleetwood and McVie to get it back.
