One possibility I was considering was whether or not there was some latent oxidization occurring in the paint before the clear-coating was applied,
similar to "laser rot" or "disc rot" on certain LaserDiscs. 
But, without a chemical analysis or a testimonial by someone who worked on the production level, there's no way to be sure.
Whatever the cause is, it's a cool-as-hell effect. And given my wife's love of artistic uses of green-tones, I know buying one just like that wouldn't be a hard sell at all.
