The PJBS has a Fender TBX pre-amp. It also has a heftier bridge.
I swapped the pups and pre for Barts and an EMG pre, 20 years ago. (I think the originals are probably in my parents basement somewhere.)

That was the 2nd bass I ever owned, bought it new in 1982-4 maybe... my friend still owns it after he bought it off me 20 years ago, and damn he won’t sell it back!

I had a pearl white one with a black neck; I think I bought it in ‘85 or ‘86. Maybe they added the natural neck a bit later.
Is it just me or are the pole pieces on these pickups slightly bigger than usual?. Maybe there’s a metric size equivalent thing going on?.

You should have fun with that TBX circuit. It really livens up the harmonics—even when not playing “harmonics” per se. Crank that knob and you’ll get lots of crispy ring.

These are Fender Hot Rod pickups. The Precision and Jazz basses in the Boxer series all had these oversized poles.
Yeah mine had the black lacquer on back of the neck, they started the natural after that for sure
I've often wondered what components of that finish cause it to shift from pewter to greenish-grey over time. Copper, bronze and brass take on a green patina when they oxidize, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are trace amounts of them in the mix.
