Knockout "Game"

At least one set of guys falls into both the "cowardly" and "mentally deficient" camps :rollno:

This is old hat in Australia, except they called in "king hitters..." or something like that.

In the last few week “the media” in Australia have, as a united voice, stopped referring to someone being “King Hit”, it sounds too much like a glory to the puncher. They’ve re-branded these assaults as a Cowards Punch, similar to the US term sucker-punch I guess. They’ve also wasted no time publicly humiliating anyone accused of such an attack, naming and shaming them as a Coward. The common theme amongst the perpetrators seems to be MMA competitor, steroids and alcohol.

A few kids have died as a result of a tough guy smacking them in the head for a bit of a laugh.

Awesome.

The mayor of Denver was on talk radio today, and he spent considerable time addressing the media impact on these cases (we just had another one in the last 24 hours or so). I don't need a pointless debate about how much of the problem media handling is, but it is a chunk of the problem, and Mayor Hancock came right out and said so. He is also advocating we (and the press) stop glorifying this behavior with the term "Knockout Game," because games are innocent and this certainly isn't, and call it what it is: Assault.

I think we should start calling them Coward's Punch over here too.

Just like the blizzard over here in WNY was a myth this week because it snowed 10" instead of the 24-36" they were forecasting. Or that it's a "myth" because I can't measure the amount of snow due to the wind blowing it.

OP/EDs...

Yes I know there is a false "these black kids are crazy!! Lets get 'em!!" thing going on. I am paying no credence to and blowing right by that.

Yes I know it is not a nationwide organized thing; these are largely isolated incidents. None of this is new to me.

Like said, though,

Yes, but the fact is, more than a few people believe the media is the bigger issue - that the media is somehow coaxing young people into doing these things. Attempts to claim the media "fabricated" incidents. That leads to an outright denial they actually happen. EDIT: Actually, so far it has been the "mainstream media".

That's why some people aren't grasping what you're saying. They believe that the "knockout game" is a myth perpetuated by "mainstream news" to sensationalize.

I contributed hard data earlier to show that young people are quickly gravitating away from "mainstream news" so that the sensation of "mainstream news" is likely not even reaching them. If anything, "mainstream news" is just making old white people think they're gonna get socked walking through an urban neighborhood.

The first time I heard about it was from a 20 year old, who most likely got it from his Facebook. No mainstream news.

When did I call you a hypocrite? Did you even read my post, or were you too shocked that I didn't instantly bow down to your "I grew up in the Bronx" hood Daddy routine? And you call me witless? :eyebrow:

:eyebrow:

If this isn't the case then you might as well take that cheesy little cross out your avatar as I see absolutely nothing christian within your post here, just lazy racist sentiment.

Yes of course I read your post otherwise I would not have responded. The content of your post highlighted above is calling me a hypocrite.. yes it is.. and my assessment of your post quoted above has much more weight than your assessment of me being a racist based on anything I have posted anywhere in this thread...

Hood Daddy? Really??! :scowl:

Within the context of this "discussion" we are having if you do not see the irony there I just don't know what to say..

No the point of that post was not to impress you in any way it was just to show you who you were calling a racist and to give you a little background on me in the hopes that you would see how ludicrous that accusation is. I have no need to impress you or anyone else on this forum. I already have the respect of the people that matter most to me in my life namely my wife, children and parents and extended family.. However I will not stand by idly while someone slanders me unjustly in person or on an internet forum without at the very least trying to correct whatever misperceptions they may have.

Perhaps 'punch whitey' is a bi-product of this frustration, but singling out a race as having a disproportionately large 'problem' with violent crime is fairly dangerous if you have no statistics to back up your claim.

Yeah but you see... that is not what I did. Did you read my posts? Did you really read them?
Or did you just see what you wanted to see to bolster your initial impression of me as being some racist white evangelical with no friends of color to speak of.. :hmm:

Look ... as a man of color born and bred in the U.S. in the 50s, 60s and 70s .. I know what racism is (not that that experience makes my perception of racism more valid than someone else's who may have had different experiences of racism) .. and I have experienced racism first hand on multiple fronts many times in my life up to and including within the last few days .. so for you to sit here and publicly denounce me as a racist and slander my faith to boot all because I said that this particular instance of violence perpetrated by young men i.e. the "knockout game" is mostly being engaged in by young men of color.. this isn't the skinheads of the northwest.. or the "king hitters" of Australia ... this is a specific series of events at a specific period in time.. and I even said that it was not all black on white .. but that the black on white incidents get heavier press than the black on black ones do just as white on black police shootings get heavier press than the black on black ones do ... well I am not going to just let you do that to me without responding. What I said was not being racist.. It was being truthful. I have never been one to let anyone pi$$ on me and call it rain and I am too dadblamed old to start doing it now and I don't care if we are face to face or on the internet. Now I have stated my case and you can take it or leave it, I really don't give a hoot... but now you know a little bit more about who you are dealing with so if you continue on this same line of thought then that's on you....

I have nothing more to say to you on the subject.

I'm on board with that

I first heard about it on TBOT.

I think that if they publicized the prosecution of the perpetrators of these crimes as much if not more than the crimes themselves it would go a long way to deterring it. IIRC this is not new new.. it actually started a few years ago .. but it was perceived as a few isolated incidents. This actually started as far back as the early 90s on the east coast.. at least in the U.S. and IIRC it was something like point them out knock them out.. and some believe that it started as a gang initiation. I am not sure if that is correct though.. but it sounds plausible. I think it was also in the UK in the early 2000s.. back then it was called "Happy Slapping" and I don't know if knocking the person out was a goal or not.. It was also in Denmark , France and of course Australia as MT mentioned.

It's a rare, rare bird who will actually do that, especially on the internet. IME

Sure, but I think we can both agree it SHOULD happen more often. Part of me changing my user name to my actual name was a reminder that I should strive to talk to people online (and on TB in particular) the same way I would in real life.

If anything I'm actually much more polite and restrained online since tone and humor/sarcasm don't come across as easily as face to face.

And of course, you don't really know who you are talking to either. So when I've made a false assumption I try chalk it up as a learning experience, suck it up and say I was wrong.
