Kubicki club, part 2

My feeling is that if you don't play them or think you will, better to let someone else play them. Nothing wrong with holding on to one (or both) but if they don't get any use then... why?

I own more basses than I probably should and I struggle with that question myself. But I've also held onto something and found a use for it in a later project so ya never know.

My friend has an interesting blue quilt that has a headstock with tuning machines, he got in a pawnshop... had a tag on it that said Kubicki Prototype.
No serial number...

Wonder what it is worth?

I’d wager it’s mis represented and not originally made by Phil but it’s a guess without examination.

As saltydude stated, this is most likely a misrepresented bass and is not a Kubicki. As far as I know, Phil didn’t make any neck through Factors.

Just picked up this Midnight Blue ‘closet queen’. If not for a bit of hazing on the back (not even ‘rash’) you’d think it never got played.

Should I keep it or sell it? Already have one this color. Or maybe sell the other which is only slightly less nice.

What do you guys think?

Those pictures might be worth less than 1,000 words.

I dunno what that is. I'd be curious what the headstock logo says. Certainly don't see anything Kubick-ish about it.

Pretty sure Phil didn’t build this bass. Not his style. It has a Steinberger style bridge and that mixed with a full headstock with tuners doesn’t make any sense. The pickups are Bartolini Hi-A which were made in the early/mid 70’s.

Don’t know what brand of bass this is but it’s definitely been modified with the Steinberger bridge and vintage Bartolini pickups. Kind of a Frankenstein(berger) bass. Would love to see a close up shot of the headstock to see the markings.

I’ve got a 93 in that color. My only gripe is it’s my heaviest ExFactor. I’d part with it. It’s VERY minty.

IDK. I wouldn’t have two the same color unless it was a very early model and or very rare color.

Most likely not... but to turn the question around, what about this would suggest that it is one?

To me, it is not looking or quacking like a duck. If you friend can supply better photos, particularly of the headstock we might at least have a better idea of what it is.

Short answer No.


However. Almost every consecutive serial number corresponds with the Phil and Fender build timeline.

This is a mysterious cultists following Luthier and bass. Phil did many things he wanted to do for himself and his clientele. Different woods, finishes and tops. Phil did what he did. It’s half the reason this instrument has such a draw and dedicated fan base.
