Kubicki club?

I have been getting quite a few comments recently on the tone of mine---even G.E. Smith, whom I don't think had ever heard or seen one before---just apparently heard of them. He commented on what great lows it has.
Deep and clear. I often get comments on how great it sounds, from audience members to sound engineers. Last gig, my singer commented on how nice it sounded. I nodded and said "Yeah, I've had it for over 16 years and it still sounds sweet." He nodded sagely. "Ah," he said, "so it's an old hunk of junk but just happens to sound great. Cool."

I just smiled. Hunk of junk? Singers. Ya gotta love 'em :).

That's my. I really love Kubicki basses and waiting for my fretless one. Hi all! :)

@shriekback - don't know about that color either. In the picture it looks more like my charcoal grey. Maybe you can take another picture of it that shows the blue more?

Beautiful bass either way!

Thanks Zuma!

I bought it from an online site a couple of years ago and, although they described it as "graphite" in color, It does not have the larger sparkle bits that I have seen on the graphite (or "charcoal") colored basses. It is definitely a "pearl" finish (finer sparkle elements) and has a bluish hue under most lighting conditions. Thumbing around on the web, the only color option I could find listed that would seem to capture it was "Midnight Blue Pearl". I'll try to get another picture, but the one posted is pretty representative.

Dunno about that, but props for the Schopenhauer books on the shelf behind it! Love his ideas.

+1 Schope. Life is suffering.

I work mostly in social and political philosophy and the philosophy of film (my new film website: Invalid Link Removed), but Schopenhauer was my first philosophical love whom I still read regularly, and I finally got to teach a graduate seminar on him and Kierkegaard last year. There's a newer translation of "The World as Will and Presentation" that is excellent.

Have we discovered a connection between an appreciation for Kubicki basses and Schopenhauer? Both are severely under-appreciated by all who have not spent very much time with them.

Interesting, I think :)
The second way, for my mind, it is Fear of Kubicki basses. Why? I know a couple of people, who sold their Kubicki, cause they can't play perfect on other basses after a long-time playing factor, cause factors so perfect comfortable, that u start to love 32' scale, it's neck and others factors. So, when u after start play for example 36' scale bass.. sometimes it is hard.

But they weren't really Kubicki fans, if they did it :)))

Some of fan-art on my back :)

Ugh.. I am having some issues with the input jack on my red '95, which is my main gigging bass!

I wonder if replacing the input jack is a DIY job or if it would have to go to Phil....

Also there is this intermittent issue with the active preamp going out... I'll be playing and suddenly the volume will fall over 2-3 seconds and I got nothing. passive still works and if I reseat the instrument cable and switch the selector knob it's back to normal and luckily doesn't happen very often but I am wondering what the hell is up with that and afraid it will happen on a gig...

Factor,

I have a similar problem but, I think it's just the jack. Replacing the jack is a DIY job if you can solder a little.

I need to find out if a normal switchcraft 1/4" jack will work. The bezzel (outer nut) is different. I think we can re-use that bezzel. I will call Phil asap and get some better info.

Do any of my fellow Kubicki owners have one modded like this? Or even seen one like this?

I imagine this is an uncommon, perhaps even unique, mod for a Kubicki. I have a 34" scale Kubicki--it came stock that way and is known as a "Factor 4" (as opposed to an "Ex-Factor"). It is exactly the same as an Ex-Factor--same bridge/tuning mechanism, and even the same neck. It just doesn't have the string extension clasp and 36"/32" hybrid scale. I have had a couple of Ex-Factors and prefer the Factor 4 for fretless. The "fretless" Ex-Factor is actually (and rather oddly in my experience) a single-fret when the string clasp is released.

Personally, I think having the string extension mechanism for the sake of a single half-note is kind of silly. Also, the Factor 4s typically sell for a bit less on the used market. If one really wanted a 34" scale Factor, I could certainly understand (I love mine) but I would think most would buy one that had been made that way. Relocating the string clasp could not have been an easy undertaking.
