Yep, someone definitely overpaid for that one by a grand.

Based on how much these usually go for, you are right. From the point of view of quality and what it would cost to buy a new one, however, I don't think it is a bad deal. I suspect a couple of folks had been waiting for one in good shape and really dug that color. If they keep it for a while, and keep it in good shape, they won't lose any money in the long run; Kubickis are only getting more scarce.

I think we are simply accustomed to used Factors selling for much less than they ought to when compared to other instruments of similar (or even inferior) quality. That stinks, of course, when you are looking to sell one, but it makes them easily the best bargain in high-end basses from the point of view of a buyer. It is always the suggestion I make to other players who decide they want to buy a really nice bass; "Look for a used Kubicki; they are a bargain." That advice probably won't hold forever, although I doubt this single case is indicative of that.

A "bad deal" would ultimately be in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure the guy who bought this bass feels just fine with the purchase, just as I was finding an '89 in MINT condition for $800 :D

I paid $1800 including shipping around November, 2009, for this absolutely flawless (case perfect too) '89. I had to ship it from Germany. I agree that the deal is in the eye-of-the-beholder but, I did see several nice ones go (missed them by that much) for around $800 just before i got fed up and just paid for this one.

Point is, I think these basses will hold their value in the long run. Most $800 deals I've seen were from people who really thought they were asking a fair price for a bass i.e. non musicians, non collectors, etc..., but didn't research the true value.

I've heard this story more than once now: I bought this bass for my (wife, girl friend, etc...) and it has just sat in the closet for the last X years. And, now I just want to sell it for what I can get. I think these are the $800 deals we are seeing lately.
