Happy day! My first Lakand (44-01) is on the way! It should be here next week.After reading through all 39 pages of this thread, I'm even more excited. Thanks for all of your great feedback and suggestions.

Well here are the pics of my upgraded 55-01. I love it and it sounds so much different after the change. The highs are a little more subdued but the lows and mids are out of this world.

Very nice!! Are those Big Singles? Is the preamp stock? Sorry, I forgot.
Yes they are Big Singles and I added an Aggie OBP-3 with the push/pull mid switch. I am thinking that I should have gotten the Fat Stacks and added switches to take it from single to stacked. I like the way it sounds though with the Singles. I keep my blend knob in the middle so hum is not a problem.
Nice combo. I'm getting Big Singles with a Nordy pre in my J. What freqs is the mid set at? Is it shielded too? You could probably do a switch on one of the pots if you decided to switch to Fat Stacks or Dual Coils.
My 5501 (LH3+US Barts) is the only bass of the dozen or so I've owned that is sonically even across the spectrum.
I have to take that back my, MTD ZX5 was the same way.
Highs, Low and Mids all even. Great for chords and wicked for slapping and popping....

The mids on OPB3 are set at 400, and 1khz.
Dual Coils are coil tappable.
Fat stacks are single coils, wound in halves so as to cancel hum.
I don't like the Aggie preamp with Nord pickups as well as I like Nordstrands own preamp with Nord pickups.
The specs read the same (except for the mid being switchable from 400 to 1000 on the Aggie), but the Nordstrand preamp sounds much more natural; and I very much like the passive tone control on the Nordstrand.
I'd put the Lakland LH3 preamp a close second to the Nord preamp (paired with Nord pickusp), but it does not have passive tone.

I thought Fat Stacks can be wired so they can go from being a Fat Stack to being single coil?

These pickups are shipped with three conductor wire for a split-able installation. When the third lead is shorted to ground only the top coil will remain active for a louder, more aggressive and mean version of the fat tone these pickups deliver (albeit with 60 cycle noise that single coils inherently possess). Think of it as a turbo charger for tone!

OBP-3
The OBP-3 is Aguilar's most flexible onboard preamp design, providing +/-18dB of cut and boost at 40Hz, +/- 16dB of cut and boost at either 400Hz or 800Hz and +/- 16dB of treble cut and boost at 6.5 kHz. The OBP-3 has multiple wiring options, and can be wired with either a mini-toggle or internal dip-switch for midrange frequency selection.
The LH3 can be configured with passive tone control. Although it's not the standard config, it would require an additional control knob.
could I see a hi res close up of a 55-01 with the 5 pot pre and 2 switches? trying to plot out the electronics. I have high plans for a 55-01 soon
