Just to be clear: I'm only funnin' with you...

I don't think I could play up that high, and still sing.
I don't move much past 7 when I sing.

I thought I'd share some photos of my 5501 in stealth mode.

I was inspired by NorCal Dog's treatment of a Squire w/ Nordies that I saw here. The bass was pretty scratched up when I got it and you know how gloss black is for revealing every little thing.

I am still waiting on the neck pickup but I took some shots to share anyway. I have a Sandberg 3 band pre for this bass, but I'm going to see how I like it passive first. If I stay passive I will plug the extra holes.

I've read through this thread and I'm really impressed with the mods some of you have made to your 01's.

I have an early '02 55-01. It was stock unitl yesterday; I did the "Lakland 55-01 Poor Man's Passive". Thanks seanm! I wired both pickups and noticed a marked improvement in the overall sound. BUT... I'm not quite satisfied.

At first I was going to upgrade with a Bart NTMB pre. But after reading the the posts I think I'll get something closer to what I want by going with a passive set-up. I'm thinking maybe Nordstrand Big Singles or some sort or Bartolinis with VVT controls.

I recently had the privelige of playing a blues gig using a friends '65 Jazz Bass equiped with Barts (don't know which model) the rest of the electronics were stock AFAIK. This thing was nothing short of AMAZING. Played with a light touch the sound was big and round, dig in and the growl & sizzle would just leap right out, slap and pop sounded great too, and of course backing off the neck pickup got that tight Jaco sound.

I know I wont nail the tone of the '65 Jazz spot on, but I'd like to get somwhere in the ballpark. The use of words like growl and sizzle fall short to describe what I'm after, so I edited a fairly short MP3 clip from said gig. I've tried to post it but for some reason it won't upload.

I'll keep trying to upload the MP3, but if any of you would like to hear it, PM me and I'll email it direct.

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions you all may have to help me in this latest quest for tone.

Nordy Big Singles will give you an excellent single coil jazz bass tone.

Probably not a 65 jazz tone.

If that's exactly what you want I would talk to the guys at Nordstrand about a custom wind...

MK5's are what i think i'm going to go for, but if you get the Nordie's, get the parallel versions so you can set them up as switchable, imo. Of course, if you wanted to have a good platform to start on, i did just pick up a nice condition 55-01 that i might let go for what i paid for it. I am gassin for the -02 series and if i sell the 55-01 i have left, i could definitely swing one offa here. ;)

Could you describe the tonal differences that you noticed between the passive and active versions of the bass?

Eventually I plan on upgrading the bass, but in the mean time I'm considering wiring up a passive setup for the bass.

Anyone have a report on how their 55-01 sounds with a passive harness with a traditional treble-cut tone knob?
