Nordy Big Singles will give you an excellent single coil jazz bass tone.

Probably not a 65 jazz tone.

If that's exactly what you want I would talk to the guys at Nordstrand about a custom wind...

Could you describe the tonal differences that you noticed between the passive and active versions of the bass?

Eventually I plan on upgrading the bass, but in the mean time I'm considering wiring up a passive setup for the bass.

Before I bypassed the preamp the sound was brittle and unpleasing, plus it was noisy (hiss and 60 cycle hum). After the bypass the noise was gone and the sound became warmer. With a few adustments of my amp, it sounded really nice.


Here's how to do it:
Lakland 55-01 Poor Man's Passive

Warning: This probably voids the warranty and could cause sun spots! You have been warned. Also, many people claim that their preamp goes passive when the volume is pulled out. Mine doesn't. According to Lakland it just bypasses the EQ. If you have the passive version, you don't need this

The good news is you can go passive with no soldering and no changes to the bass. You can also easily go back to active. The bad news is you can't blend. The blend, and tone, pots are much too low values to use passive. You would have to replace the pots.

In the attachment I show the preamp. Disconnect it. The three arrows show a green wire, a purple wire, and an orange wire. The green wire is the neck pickup. The purple the bridge pickup. And the orange the output.

You can just strip some wire and shove it in the holes. You can connect either pickup to the output or connect both pickups to the output for a 50/50 blend. Tape down the connections and you are good to go!

The volume control will work, but none of the other pots will. Also, pulling the switch on the volume control works as a mute.

I would also recommend removing the battery. With the battery removed you can't really mess anything up even if you connect the wrong wires.

To revert, remove the wires, plug the preamp back in, and reinstall the battery.

I wanted to live with it a little while before posting. I got it off ebay. The seller listed it as "new." I made an offer, he accepted, and I got a natural/maple 44-01(with Bartolini MK-1's) for 564.00 shipped. It arrived in a simple box, packed in a new gigbag. There were no tags, etc. (case candy) that normally come with a new bass. After an intense inspection in all kinds of lighting I could not find one scratch, blemish, smudge, fingerprint, swirl, or any telltale sign that it had ever been played. Alright, it's "new" enough for me.

There is no place locally that sells Laklands, so I could only form an opinion based on reviews and soundclips (I know, don't do it!) Anyway, it turned out fine. It does sound like the clips on the Lakland website. It has a nice, modern, burpy tone. Plays really well. It's lighter than I imagined. It's worth the price I paid, but I don't know if I would have been happy if I bought one for $735.00 from one of the "e-tailers."

You got a good price for a new bass.
I have to agree with you, I would not have paid $735 for one either.

But you know the rule.
No pics, no bass...

Yep, it's a solid-as-a-rock Lakland, like any other... just different pickups! I actually saw someone in a pretty prominent national touring group on Jay Leno a month or two ago and the bassist was playing a natural/maple 55-01 just like mine! I was stoked! Sounded killer!

And he only has one bass - a TSB 5501 Deluxe with no mods, but I'm pretty sure it has the Bart NTMB preamp in it.

Thanks. I have not been able to find anything thing that I dislike about this bass. Fit and finish is as good as any other production bass in it's price range. The stock electronics (Bartolini MK-1 pickups and preamp) are clean, quiet, and sound pretty nice. Output is good and there is no volume drop or big noise when switching from active to passive.

I just found out this was posted on MySpace. It's me playing my 55-01 on a pop country type tune. I can't believe how well this thing recorded. I've been gassin for new pickups (Nordstrand big singles). I'm sure they'll record just as well.
