I've had TI flats on my 55-01. Both through the body and through the bridge. Once with MK1's and once with Nordy DC's. What can i help you with?

Me too, with the original MK-1's. That was the bass that made me conclude I don't like TI Flats, at least the five string sets. I wasn't that bowled over by them at any rate. I so much prefer the JO flats. At the moment that bass is back to rounds, but I've got the JO's set aside for when I want a change again.

Bottom line here:

55-02 = Kinda J/Kinda P/Kinda MM (and that's not a bad thing at all!)

55-01 w/Nordstrands = J-BASS/J BASS/J BASS ... done Nordstrand-style. (Which I happen to love!)

If you're looking for tender, chewy J-Bass goodness, the 55-01 with Nordies is the way to go. If you want a bass that is more of a "jack of all trades", go with the 55-02.

I don't really agree. Maybe with the big singles, but not with the Dual Coils. I think of mine as more of a G&L L-2500 except with wider string spacing and a 35" scale. That's not totally right, but much closer to the mark for DC equipped 55-01's.

I wouldn't want a 55-02. To each their own. The 55-01 with dual coils and splitting options was exactly what I wanted. Lakland seems to market the 55-01 as a lesser bass than the 55-02, but I think of them as equal but different, like a Jazz bass vs. a Precision. Lakland may be coming to that conclusion now, too.

I was referring to the Nordstrand Big Splits, which is what I have in my 55-01. It has a serious J sound.

I had an interesting think to day about Talkbass Clubs and their effects upon TB'ers buying habits. IIRC, it was a bit less than 2 years ago that I was asking in a couple threads if anyone had tried out modding the -01 series basses. No one had reported doing the nordy swap, and I think that only one person had reported done the Bart preamp swap. I remember thinking I had stumbled on something amazing 1.5 years or so ago at the Lakland plant when they had a 44-01 with the LH3 pre in it.

Enter the 55-01 club a year ago, and suddenly modded 55-01's are everywhere, and I mean that in a good way I just played Robear's a couple weeks ago, and it was awesome. I think that perhaps even more than TB in general, TB clubs can rapidly spur creative tinkering with basses. It's a neat dimension that we gather not just to associate around a certain instrument, but also to expand and experiment with the capabilities of that instrument.

Just some thoughts.

Some very excellent thoughts!

I could not agree with you more.

This place keeps me from having the re-invent the wheel.

And I always have some idea of what I'm buying even though I may not have played it...

SuperT, are the MK5's you have the Classic Bass series?

Yes Sir! MK5CBC's

I am strongly considering a 44-01, and do what (you) did with an LH3 and MK4s. I might also want Noride Dual Coils, I can't decide.

If you want a bass that sounds MASSIVE, no frequency dips,
a slap monster, beautiful detailed chords and great for soloing, look no further.

US Barts + a LH3 is the pot of gold at the end of the 01 rainbow...

Huh...
Playing up over 12th position, and singing at the same time?

I thought only guitar players did that.

Hmmmm...

I purposely cropped the guitar player out of the picture...

I'm doing a little Oteil thing during sound check.

And I've burned up more than one nomex suite with my bass playing...
