Lakland or Ibanez?

Back in the realm of stuff that's actually relevant to the OP, here's a demo clip of the Lakland pickups and preamp (compared to a P bass, a jazz, and a Stingray) recorded by TBer Ian Allison for Lakland. Different people have drawn different conclusions about how close the 55-02 gets to those instruments, so draw your own conclusions.:)

I would like to say a quick word about benchmarks, intelligence and wittyness.

Lowness, your frank and often biting posts here are sometimes warranted and entertaining...but...you never seem quite smart enough to know when to stop or acquiesce when you are obviously wrong. In fact you just turn up your troll dial and now you fall back on the "I was just being witty" excuse.

If we were to start rating benchmarks for posting habits yours would fall well below a respectable level. You seem more interested in asserting your self described intelligence than engaging in any kind of real dialogue.

To me the Lakland replicates the Jazz and Ray sound very well. I sounds like it has a more powerful sound than the Jazz and Ray. To my ears, it does not sound like a P at all. Probably because it does not have a split coil pickup. All in all, the bass does sound great though.

The J pickup is a side by side split coil. Great for hum cancelling but not good at replicating the traditional Split P-Bass sound. That's where the active electronics come in to help fill in the missing beef. Sounds decent in a mix but if you want a true P-bass tone there really is no substitute for an actual P-Bass. IMHO, YMMV and all that jazz.

So...it is nice to see you sticking around your thread after the giant derail. Have you come closer to making your decision?

  • Based on what I have heard from the Lakland, I think the Lakland will sound better than the Ibby. I really like the Ibby, but I think the Lakland will meet my needs better. I also thought about getting a EBMM Stingray5 H, but I can't stand that clanky sound that the Stingray produces.
