how cool would that be...a 35" DJ4...hmmm. although...i can't really feel a difference between playing my sterling and the Lakland 5's i've had. I don't think it bothers me at all with only an inch between the two.

Wowzers, I guess I'm the only LOGGER not out blowing things up (I appreciate my fingers too much, lol).
turns out my neighborhood is a bunch of pyros...there have been fireworks going on about 5 houses down for about an hour now.
:scowl: while i can appreciate the celebration, having them go for that long just gets old.
What I'm after is the kind of fatness you get on early meters recordings, which I can get with my '79 P. I don't have a recording of my bass.
I should have said, too, it's probably going to be a second-user bass, so I'm unlikely to find anything with chi-sonics on it, particularly in the UK .... the only things I think of that come up relative regularly 2nd-hand over here are the J-types with the older pickups (is it barts in the Skylines ?)
I really should try some labella flats on my 55-94D to check out the jazz/neck pickup sound ... it just seems like a r/w kind of bass to me so I haven't done that experiment yet.

i think it would sound great, i know i can get a very convincing p-tone out of my 4-94, i imagine even more so with flats
Hey gang... long time, no see. Just wanted to share some impressions/info with everyone after a great studio session I had on Thursday. I'm cutting tracks for one of the bands I play in as we crank along on the 2nd studio album. My 44-02 is my go-to bass for the studio, for reasons we ALL already know.Anyway, the tunes really do demand different tones depending on the vibes, and once again this bass really shines under the microscope of the studio. We cut many tunes with all pickups/coils full-on, panning just a hair toward the front pickup for a little more bottom-end. For a couple of tunes I split the MM pickup and used the front coil, panned a hair toward the front pickup. I have to say that this is really my new favorite selection outside of everything full-on. If you haven't experimented with the front coil of the MM pickup much, do it. It's really thick and growly and adds a nice sculpted character to the overall tone. Lastly, on one or two tunes we went with the traditional 'Jazz Bass' setting, splitting to the back coil on the MM pickup. The enginner wasn't really familiar with Laklands at all, and when I got it tweaked for the J Bass setting, he looked into the control room to see if I had switched basses between takes. He was very impressed at how versatile and accurate the tonal palette of just one bass was. I think we may have a new buyer sometime soon!
+1,000 on everything! More sound engineers out there have to try out Laklands, the MME/J config in the first place.
I really dig the front coil of the MME, it is more solid whereas I found the bridge coil is crispier . Tend to use the frront coil more often

It depends on the bass. The older JOs have Fralin pickups, which get more of a '60s J sound to my ears. That with flats might get close to what you're looking for. Meanwhile, older DJs have Aeros, which are more aggressive (great for slapping--or so I'm told by people who are actually competent at it
).

Over the last few months, I've started to get a roaming eye (or ear) for something a little different, maybe more old school tone, than the ABII-5 I have. I owned a 55-02 with barts for a while and loved it, but sold it to fund the Dingwall. These new Chi-Sonic pickups look (and sound) pretty sweet. Not totally sure if I wanna sell the Dingwall though...well aware of seller's remorse given the specialness of this bass. Anyhow, I've got an iPhone as well....once you go Mac you never go back!
yep, the chi's are super nice sounding. i've got the proto now, so i'm happy with that. now i just need to get my hands on a dj4 and one just popped up in the classifieds, too. le sigh...no gear cash tho, since i bought my sterling HH back from the person i sold it to.
LOL. I did the same thing with a once-piece SR5 H natural/rw. I back it back from the guy I sold it to, then sold it again 5 months later. I guess I realized EBMM just wasn't for me. I would like to get a Lakland again though, either a 55-02/94 or a JO4/5 (US or Skyline).

favoring the neck pickup on a jazz (i usually just slightly roll off the bridge pickup) won't ever sound just like a pbass, but it can get close, so the osborn 5 w/flats seems like the best choice. you get the "jazz" tone and the "almost p" tone. there is also a bit of single coil hum when doing that, but if it's ever a problem, just put both pu's at 100% and roll with it. i have a usa osborn 5 that is great. i have a buddy who used to have a skyline jo 5 and he said it was a really solid, nice sounding bass. hope that helps
