I have a Fender P, '79, strung with flats that I love.

Trouble is, I'm pretty tied in to 5 strings these day and I've also become addicted to the versatility of 2 p/u basses.

So ....

Can anyone suggest a 2-pickup Lakland that when strung with flats would get close to my '79 P in sound ?

Not sure the 'neck' pickup of the J-type lakies will cut it really and I'd prefer not to go for a P-type bass unless I have to because I prefer the versatility of two pickups (though maybe it's not needed for that flatwound sound I have in my head).

Any ideas ?

Oh, and based on current budget, I'm thinking skyline too.

All my ChiSonic basses can get a great P sound. Do you have a clip we could listen too?

Hey gang... long time, no see. Just wanted to share some impressions/info with everyone after a great studio session I had on Thursday. I'm cutting tracks for one of the bands I play in as we crank along on the 2nd studio album. My 44-02 is my go-to bass for the studio, for reasons we ALL already know. :bassist: Anyway, the tunes really do demand different tones depending on the vibes, and once again this bass really shines under the microscope of the studio. We cut many tunes with all pickups/coils full-on, panning just a hair toward the front pickup for a little more bottom-end. For a couple of tunes I split the MM pickup and used the front coil, panned a hair toward the front pickup. I have to say that this is really my new favorite selection outside of everything full-on. If you haven't experimented with the front coil of the MM pickup much, do it. It's really thick and growly and adds a nice sculpted character to the overall tone. Lastly, on one or two tunes we went with the traditional 'Jazz Bass' setting, splitting to the back coil on the MM pickup. The enginner wasn't really familiar with Laklands at all, and when I got it tweaked for the J Bass setting, he looked into the control room to see if I had switched basses between takes. He was very impressed at how versatile and accurate the tonal palette of just one bass was. I think we may have a new buyer sometime soon!

Finally, to throw a bit of non-Lakland content in the mix here, I have been using my Tech21 VT Bass pedal non-stop both live and in the studio lately, and I highly recommend it to folks who want a very powerful pre-shaping box in their signal chain. If you like the tube amp sound/character as part of your overall sound, you must check this little box out. It really made all the tracks in the studio come to life, and has done wonders for my direct (FOH) sound and pre-amp sound into my live rig. Whether I'm using my 44/55-01 axes or my 44-02, it really brings everything to life and supercharges it. Check it out!

I have a Skyline DJ5 with Chi-Sonics currently strung with Chromes and sporting an Audere Pre. If you like, I could maybe record something with the front pickup and e-mail it to you. What kind of stuff do you want to hear for comparison? Mind you, it will be my own ham-fisted version of it, and the technique might sound as if it has been played with Barney Rubble's feet.

Great to hear! Lakland does it again!

My VT petal is an always on effect. LOVE it! Best pedal made, in my opinion.

if i recall correctly that was a 35" scale bass? anyways it looked sweet and they were playing new material, so im double psyched:hyper:

Gus - post it on the LOG site (now accepting sound clips) so we all can hear it.....you can get a sweet P-type sound out of a CHI-sonic neck pick up....
