Lakland Owners Group #22

I got a question for all you Lakland'ers out there. Im torn between getting a new 55-02 deluxe, or a used 5-94 deluxe. Of course the used american model is more expensive, so I thought I'd ask you guys for a comparison.

I would like to know if they are both tonal different, or if one plays better than the other.
Any information would be appriciated.

Thanks.

Tonally...they are probably slightly different, but the neck will feel nicer on the 55-94. Built quality will be better with the 55-94 too, but not saying Skylines aren't built great.
+1 on this. Also, the Skylines come only with ash bodies, while the 55-94s could be alder, ash or possibly even mahogany. US necks are amazing. I would say in this market, go looking for a used 55-94--you can probably get a great deal, if you're patient.

I just replaced the original Bartolini setup on my 55-94 with the LH pickups/tone controls. I like them a good bit better than the Barts - I'm leaving to set up in a bit and will get to see how they fit in the mix this weekend. I'm not sure of who is playing - the musician lineup runs the range of bass, drums and keys to bass, drums, percussionists (2), piano, keyboards, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and up to 45 strings/winds. I guess I'll see what is up when I get there!

Anyway, through my Glock/Tri-115 rig the pickups seem to have a bit more aggessiveness and "up front" tone compared to the Barts. Still on the darker side tone-wise but probably about half-way between the Barts and the Duncans.

Hmmmm...with the new 55-02, should I install a pickguard? My JO and BG are both 3TB with black guards and I like it....should I put a black guard on this one too? Does double sided tape mess with the finish? If I do one, it would be with tape, not putting holes in it. Anyone have any pics of a 3TB 55-02 with a black p/g?

So many questions....

My new-to-me Lakies for the new thread. I love'em!

Having tasted my 1st US lakland, they do seem to have a little something more special to them. The skylines are still some of the best bang for the buck basses you can get (on par with EBMM american-made basses I would say).

... and that I have sworn off fretless for life?
You guys kick my butt if I ever think of getting another one. I lost my tail on the fretless Glaub.

BTW anyone interested in a fretless Glaub Neck??

Hmmm....a fretless Glaub.....hmmmm.....I was playing my BG P/J this weekend (will be playing it in church tomorrow) and wow....I had forgotten how great a pure P sounds....fretless, it may sound cool as well....let me give it some thought...PM m with a price...

as for fretless....common Terry - OK - I will kick your butt (I promise!!! :smug:)

it's back in my hands!
