Lakland pickups....late 2008...doubt it's PLEK'd.....Plek did not come in until 2009.

Any new news? I know you were not very happy with the sound....

No news other than to say ive ordered some Elixirs to put on it and hope that helps. They should be here by the end of the week.
I did another gig at the weekend and the tone is usable, no doubt about it. The band like the tone and im sure i could get used to it but i really do want my P tone back.
i'll need to mess around with the EQ on my amp as well over the next few gigs.
The DJ5 is a much better bass IMHO so ill stick with it but i think ill end up putting a P pup in it sooner rather than later.
Im almost tempted to take the pup out of my P5 but would be silly as i need to sell it at some point.

Still open to ideas about pup options though. And still waiting to order the black scratch plate.

Got a few more pics up.

Nice! I LOVE the Nordy NP5 in the BG5. Also, Roger should be able to make the pickguard with the P opening in it without a problem. Good luck!

I'm with Randy on this. They got the Plek machine in late 2008. My Skyline Decade's serial number starts with "0811", and it's Plek'd.

Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders are pretty P bass sounding in my opinion. I had them on a F&^@$% J bass.

Well as you can see, im in that thread as well but i do want to stress that im happy with the bass and while im not 100%with the pick tone i had already aired my worries about going back to a Jazz after really getting in to my P sound before i got my DJ5 so for me its just a transitional thing, i hope.
I play 99% with a pick and while im not really digging the tone (yet) im going to change strings and see how things develop.

For me its just a lack of punch and thickness that im missing.
Im hoping a set of elixirs will do the trick as i dont really like SS strings as i find them too bright and playing with a pick seems to exaggerate this.

I've said this a bunch, but it's worth repeating... Get a tech to wire up a series switch for those jazz pups. The 2 halves of a P pup are ran in series. My jazz has a much fatter tone in series, I never use parallel anymore.

With DR Loriders and pick, I'm able to get the Shinedown "Save Me" tone and am very close to Duff's Velvet Revolver tone. I think Shinedown's is a Stingray bass, but that's what I'm gettin. A lot fatter than a typical jazz IMO.

Cheers guys.
Jedi. yes, ive not forgotten your suggestion and its on my list but my thinking is why go half way when i can go all the way?
Saying that, if its something i can do myself i might give it a try. I dont suppose you have any wiring diagrams do you? I'll not bother with the switch, just wire them together and see how it goes. Like you i doubt i would need the typical jazz tone.

Dave:

sticking a P pickup in there would be GREAT! Lakland can do that and can match the set for minimum hum and interfearance...that would be a HOT P/J!

On my "someday Maybe I should" list is exactly that.....black DJ5 with P/J...actually like the JO body better but cannot get the blocked neck on a Skyline so......
