LAKLAND OWNERS GROUP #26

Hey

Can you experts help?

I want a Jazz 5 String, tested the JO5 and DJ5. I like the JO colours more, but I also like the DJ inlays. I emailed Lakland and apparently they have identical elecs now.

The JO5 is £200 less! And it nails that sound.

I have a Fender 4 sting 2009 Jazz, and thats with maple so thats more aggressive.

With a low B, is it better to go for a rosewood or maple board?

I cant decide whether to get the JO5 in rwood, or DJ5 in maple, (UK apparently has a few DJ's left).

It would be the Skyline models. Im tempted to get a JO5 and put flats on it.

Basically I want the best 5 string Jaz Bass....and these 2 are the contenders. Is the DJ5 neck shape any different?

Well if you already said the JO nails the sound you're wanting, I think you have your answer :)

Honestly though, it's a win-win in my opinion. I really don't think you'd be disappointed with either.

Hi Gareth,

The DJ5 used to have a different neck shape some time ago, but it's identical to the JO5 (and all other Lakland 5s) these days. I don't play fivers myself, but I've seen plenty of Lakland 5s with rosewood boards and plenty with maple, too. I'm in the camp that believes there isn't much tonal difference between maple and rosewood fretboards. In any case, it's hard to say one is better than the other--get what looks best to you and may fit more with what you're going for tonally (aggressive or mellower). Obviously, you'll save some money with the JO5 (no blocks/binding/matching headstock). Good luck in your choice.:)

Thanks for the fast response.

I have a dealer who sells the JO5 at a much better price than most of the UK....this is for a new ordered in instrument. Plus....if I like it a lot ill get whatever they replace the DJ5 with early next year :)

Ive just seen some pics....the JO5 Sunburst is lovely. Im a tradional colours man so maybe the JO5 plus flats and leave the more aggressive Jazz tone to my MIA Maple F Jazz.

Greg, I DARE you...if you ever order a "new" Lakie from the factory to get it painted orange with blue stripes or visa versa....
