Since Aaron's not been on here in a few days...

UPS lost his neck again, FOR THE SECOND TIME!!! We think it's the local crew down there in Alabama. But, it's just so hard to believe that they'd lose it AGAIN, after all that hassle.

Pat ended up using his CAR color sample to do my headstock.

Anyways, let's keep our fingers crossed for Aaron.

Well, that was Carl's first cut, and I didn't even know he was doing it for me, so he kinda went w/ his gut. Nothing but appreciation for him from me... He was ready to reshape it for me, all I had to do was call him. I just figured my way would be easier.

Oh I'm not criticizing Carl by any means, just being honest. I also agree with Gus in that a non MM style PG could work as well

I'm not sure if this cell phone picture will show up, but my DS HB ARRIVED!!! Before I ask a few questions, I could not be more happy with the tone. WOW. This bass has exceeded my expectations in every way. I began gassing for a HB LAK after playing an early US HB lak at willies guitar in minneapolis about 6 months ago. The "skyline" model (which I have) doesn't seem like a "sub" or "lower" model much at all to me!!

I've got a few questions (from a newbie to Lakland, HB, and DS)..

The volume taper on the pickups is the same on both knobs (one is a little scratchy). But I'm not used to the actual taper... From about 10-6.5 there is not much discernable volume difference...from about 6.5 to 2, there is some drop-off, from 2-0, there is silence... I'm used to the ol' p-bass where the volume gradually drops...is this part of the unique design of the HB/LAKLAND volume pots, or an issue?

I also notice while playing that the "arch" in the top causes the "bridge" DS pickup to be closer to the strings, and if I go crazy on the "E" string, I occasionally (semi-rarely) hit the DS "E" pole piece, which is ONE HECK OF A MAGNET!! It actually holds the string temporarily. Do I just need better technique and more practice on playing with a softer hand? The pole piece is already flush with the housing.

Over-all, the LAK HB is a tone animal. LOTS of low end, and the bridge PU overdrives VERY NICELY (when pushed) into the amp...the "highend-cut" switch is also pretty cool, and subtly different than just rolling off the tone.

Anyway, I actually feel quite feel privileged to have this lakland...I can see this bass (along with my 1969 p) becoming #2 in the never gonna sell side of the arsenal!

hey MAJOR congrats!!!

Skyline quality is fantastic as you say....I would put Skylines up to many US made basses!!

sounds like it may need a set up and some reviewing of the tone knob....scratchiness may just need some cleaning etc...if the potentiometer is not set right you will get an issue with the volume...Carl can fix it...

I would also have him adjust the pickups...

but play it for a while first and then send it to him.....

I'm actually wrestling with trimming it, 'cause I think the asymmetry matches the body shape well, all the 4-94/02s and 55-94/02s have the deep-set lower horn w/ the long upper horn.

Very nice!!! My volume knobs aren't quite like p bass volume knobs either, but not much to get used to. With the DS, you could raise the saddles a little and re-intonate it, or used a softer hand.
