Sounds like heavier gauge strings are in order, or higher action in order to get that feel he wants. I find that deeper relief in the neck automatically makes even light gauge strings feel much heavier than they really are. Medium-gauges with a low action are my favorite. Also, if he's into the tone of flatwounds those usually have a tighter feel overall than rounds. That said, I have no idea what brand of rounds you guys are into... I prefer the in-house Lakland strings across the board. Since they're made by GHS for Lakland and I am a lifelong GHS user, they are familiar to me.

Neither, it's more like a bass with severely old, dull, floppy strings even though the strings are new. We play in situations where that sound or feel is definitely NOT desirable.

Does it already have a pickguard? If so, I think it'd look pretty cool. If not, then definitely no. I'm not at all a fan of pickguards on 44/55 models

I imagine it will come with Lakland steels. When we get close to the completion date, contact Doug and see--he can check with Leo and see if they have the JO flats in. They've been short on those lately.

I have a tort guard on there now but am not really feeling it for some reason... I was thinking white or black, but can't decide. Maybe I need to live with the tort guard a bit longer. If anyone feels so inclined to post pics of Natural/Maple basses with white PGs to help me visualize, have at it. ;-)
