What means that there are two now. I feel that this 55-02 Deluxe is a very good Addition to my 55-01 Workhorse.

Here's my current 'keeper'.....
Previously I've owned an Inca Silver 55-01 w/'upgraded' Bart NTMB pre, a 55-02 (Black/Maple, stock), and a 55-01 (Natural/maple)w/ Nordstrand Big Singles.

looking for advice from all you Lakland owners. Pretty sure my next bass (5-string) is either a 55-94 or a 55-02, any comments on detailed reasons why the 94 is worth the extra $2200. I've read the technical differences looking for some firsthand experience.
Also, I've seen that current 55-94's have a separately accessible 9volt compartment, but some do not. Is this an indication of age or model, or anything?

The biggest difference is the neck. US necks are the best necks out there in my opinion. I love 'em! Just perfect.

In my post and the pic above your post, there's a 55-01, the 'lowest' Lakland model there is - there's a seperate Battery compartment.
I also own a Status Stealth 6 that runs on an 18v system, and a G&L L2500 (active/passive) that is my main workhorse bass - never had the actives die one me EVER in a performance, and I've been playing the 2 (3) for the past 5 years - I change the battery in the G&L about every 6-9 months, and I haven't changed the batteries in the Staus in 2-1/2 years.
I've never owned a US Lakland, but know some people who have them and have played them - for the $$$ difference, I am very happy with my Skyline (and the other Skylines I have owned)
I'd say the BIGGEST difference is having the option of different finishes... that really wasn't worth $2-3 thousand for me......

....but I'm really liking this one so far - and I have to say, after being around full circle (see the bottom of my previous post about this bass), it'll prob be here for a while. I had one of these, almost stock, and after it sold/while I was using it for a theatre show, I found its strength, and regretted selling it - but I did because the stock MKI/upgraded BTMB pre combination did not work for me live. Then I bought a 55-02, and it too didn't compete sound-wise to my G&L L2500. Next I bought this very same bass (Natural/Maple), but with Nordstrand Big Singles - loved it, but it didn't work at a few places I needed it to play, because of single-coil inherent noise. After a few more basses, I'm back to this, and actually liking the stock MKI/stock pre.....
So.... Keeper? ... eh, for now...... LOL!!!
I have a 55-94 and have owned 2 55-02's. The US necks defy description. Other than that, they both sound great! Though I really like the Alder body that is available with the 55-94.
With regards to the battery compartment, my 55-94 is a 1999 and they battery is inside the cover with the preamp, not in it's own battery compartment. But one of the many little details with the 55-94 (mine, anyway) is that the screws for the backplate cover are machine screws, not wood screws, so wear and tear is less of an issue. My 55-02 (2008) had a Fishman battery box. Don't remember what was on my 2002 -02.
As far as purchase decisions, 55-94's can be had for around $1,600-$2,500K used. More often than not, people tend to not mistreat basses that set them back $3,500 so they're usually in pretty good shape.
I own a 55-01 (that I modded) and a 55-94, and those represent the extreme ends of the 5 string product line. I would happily buy another of either one.
But, geez. Those US necks are something else...
I have owned a few US's and a lot of skylines, almost 30 total. Everyone who said "neck" was correct but I will also add in "weight". The US Laklands tend to be a pound or two lighter than their skyline counterparts. For me, the cost difference is not fully justified when buying brand new unless you are having something custom done but then, only you can be the judge. I think the cost difference is fully justified when looking used. The new cost difference is usually 2000-2500 but used, that delta is around 600-1000. Also you find a lot more options in the US. If you look at my sig, all of mine are US and not something you will find in a standard skyline. The tone between a 55-02 and 55-94 can be identical to my ears if everything is the same (woods, electronics, etc). It is the ergonomics and feel that are different and for me, the neck, weight, and options justify the cost difference in the used market. Good luck.

I've found that the stock 44- and 55-01 sound is very agreeable to me and have never needed a reason to upgrade it. In fact, I find my 44-02 Deluxe to be almost too nasal/aggressive when set completely flat when compared to my 44 and 55-01's. I went back and forth with it for a while and finally determined that I have to scoop out just a small amount of the mids (set at 600Hz) and boost the bass and treble just a touch to get the same sort of balanced, supportive, warm character out of the 44-02 with all of the pickups on. The bite and punch is still there, but without the harshness I was dealing with. I guess I just like a more 'polite' sound out of the all-humbucker setup than it gives when flat. Maybe this is why some folks liked the Bartolinis over the LH-3 setup? The nice thing about the EQ settings that I have now is that coil tapping is much more noticeable and dramatic, and really nails the 60s/70s Jazz Bass vibe. The point though in all this is that I like the STOCK tone of a 44/55-01 so much that I tried to get some of that character by default in my 44-02, and it seems to have worked brilliantly. Best of all worlds.

Like many have said, the 55-94 neck is TO DIE FOR! No regrets with that purchase here!
I've played every Lakland that I could get my hands on and the 2 that I own are an '02 55-01 that I've had since '02 and a 44-01 that I just picked up. There was a huge difference to me the second that I plugged in the 44-01 at band practice. I had been using a MIA Jazz bass, but the 44-01 just does it for me.
The 44-01 is natural with a maple fretboard, but I'm probably sending it off to be painted Candy Tangerine.
