LAKLAND OWNERS GROUP #50!!!

I really liked that Glockenklang The Passenger combo, by the way. Very nice and clear sound. Much better than the Hartke VX410 I rehearsed on tonight. Man, what a crappy sound does that thing have.

Yeah, but to be fair, given the price difference, I'd kinda expect the Glockenklang to sound better!
They're not really rivals, are they?!

I suppose the real rival to Glockenklang is TecAmp or TC Electronics- I'm struggling to think of an american rival. (you know, for that super hi-fi sound.) Eden, maybe? SWR?

anyways...nice gig, and nice bass!

Cheers, SoundSupport

Yeah, of course it would háve to sound better ;) But what I mean is that the VX410 was an extra disappointment compared to the Glockenklang to what it normally already is.

No, that's Lakland's nomenclature for a so-called Custom . . . should have posted a C, not CS . . . sorry for the confusion!

Vince, if you like how it plays and looks, you should try different pickups. I hear a lot of good things about Nordstrand jazz pickups and might try them on my Lakland 5 string jazz. There are so many different options out there: Fender, Aeros, Nordys, Barts, Fralins, etc. Single coil pickups are not expensive. Do some research and try something else. I am sure you will find your old tone.

Hey Laklovers...

Hate to be 'that guy' asking something that I'm sure has been spoken about before, but the search functions yield nothing useful.

I'm toying with the idea of adding a passive tone control to my 4-94. Does anyone have either or both instructions on how to do so in non-techie language and also pictures of how they configured the knob layout? Mine is from 1999 with the ol' school bart set up.

Thanks in advance all, and sorry to ask something that has been probably beaten to death as much as Chris Wostenholme's effects path (ok maybe not that much, but you get the point). :p

edit: Just to clarify, I want the control to still work in both passive and active modes if possible. At the very least, it has to work in passive mode.

no love on this one? :hiding:

;)

....and several of you wanted to see what I had planned for the coral body :D

All Birdseye maple neck and fretboard (picked the board myself via pics), jazz taper w/ steel rods (no deadspots), Hipshot tuners and string retainer, BAIII bridge w/ string-thru option.

The neck is so sturdy that the bass sounds like it should be rooted into the ground... like when you push your headstock into a wall and hold it there while playing, the bass becomes part of the wall.... that make sense??

I'm very happy with it!

absolutely gorgeous! you're my hero, Jody

only, I would use a different body color, but that's only taste

OK guys . . . don't hate me for this . . .
I have had my new Lakland Skyline CS (blocks and binding) 55-60 (Sunburst/maple) for going on two months now, and I haven't fallen in love with it yet - as all of you have done with your Laklands!
I am a Fender man - only Fender guitars and basses - and was wanting a Fender American (Deluxe or Standard) V string - TSB/maple - but Fender didn't offer that combination! So, after about four months of reading online about the Laklands, I decided to go for it, sight unseen, as I thought it would be close to the Fender Jazz sound - the looks were there!

OK, I love the looks of the 55-50, the detail, the extremely low action, but I am not crazy about the sound - too modern for me! So, I have the following options:
1. Do nothing, let the modern sound grow on me,
2. Swap pickups (maybe Fender SCNs???) - will they fit??, or Fralins, or Nords, etc.,
3. Sell it and hardshell case at a few $$$ loss - maybe around $1200, or???

I know what you would do, what do you think I should do?

Vince,

you won't see hate here, bro. We're a happy community :D
The 55-60 IS a best kind of fenderous JB, and you can get one with a choice of pickups (Fralin, Bartolini, Hanson) and electronics (passive VVT or VT/VT, active Audere or Lakland LH-3). Only the CS are, obviuosly, not "the " sound you're after. I say give the 55-60 a try with a different set of pickups. Just sell the pickups and find yourself a used set of a different kind. Go Nordies, they are a good kind of "not modern" fenderesque sound. Samarium Cobalt Nickel by Fender that you mention are not so classic at all

Thought my fellow Laklanders might enjoy checking out my setup from last night's gig at the French Broad Brewery here in Asheville. For those who are curious about the gig-in-a-brewery thing, Asheville is a huge microbrew capital, and most all of the breweries have tasting rooms in them that have, over the years, developed into solid music venues in and of themselves. They pay better than most club gigs around here, and have great draws and a built-in crowd that listens. This particular brewery venue has a great sound, and most of my main band's last live/studio CD was recorded here. Anyway, here's my 44-02D, 20+ year-old SWR Goliath I (with transition grille), and Eden WTX500. There's also a VT Bass and ART Tube MP thrown in there as well.

Actually, the nice thing about the room is that the roof over the stage is actually low and made of wood (there's office space above it), so the stage sound is actually sort of dead, which allows you to close-mic easily. The sound in the rest of the brewery/tasting room is indeed sort of naturally reverb-y, which makes for great FOH sound, but it's still tight sounding because of all the big brewing tanks and the wood throughout the room. It's a rare 'best of both worlds' combo, which is why it's become one of my favorite rooms in town to play.

Bet that sounds killer with the room acoustics bein all kind of reverby. Thanks for sharing.

And Hollowbodies.:)

Can't forget those beauties!

And the hollowbody :D

As for the sound... I agree that they are NOT "vintage" sounding. But in terms of other more "modern" sounding pickups, they definitely have a warmer, more well-rounded tone, especially on the low-end. The mids are much more articulate than a more "vintage" sounding pickup. The highs are distinctive, but not as harsh as a lot of more modern sounding pickups.

Long story short I've always thought of them as having the warmth and depth of a vintage pickup, with the articulation and distinctiveness of a modern pickup.

I agree with this.

Great pics, man!!! Thanks for sharing.

+1!

NICE!

one day turn around...gotta love it!

what do you think?

No kidding! Bam! New bass!

Love it man! Is this your version of a stud finder?:hiding:

Vince, If you like how it plays n feels, try changing the pu's. I love Fralin's, but that's all just preference. I've heard the Hanson's are a bit more modern. Probably just not your flavor.

Yeah...I wouldn't sell the bass because the pickups aren't your flavor.

Here's my Lakie today. I was recording with the famous Metropole Orchestra! :)

Nice man!

Last time I talked w/ Carl about the passive tone control on active 94s and 07s, I got the impression that they're a waste of time and money.

Opinions will vary.... call Carl.

I don't use mine on my 4-07.

Cool man! And sipping on some great beer during the gig sure completes the night, right?

Thanks! The coral is striking in person, hard to capture w/ pics. Many people say it's their favorite in my collection, even over my sparkly 'Ray.

I should add that w/ the camera flash, many pics show the bass as pink. But, in reality and in certain light the bass has a hue similar to the flesh of a ripe cantaloupe. Very rich!

Yeah, I def get it - in active mode it's not a must have. But I really dig the passive tone of my Lakie, and I'd love to have a treble roll off on board. Maybe I can get an outboard one - I know people make em. Or maybe the varitone stomp box (starts pondering...)

Thanks for responding though, I appreciate it.

JUST GOT MY NEW USA 55-69!!! I have waited 7 months+ for this!!

It's way too beautiful especially when you see it in real life.
Here's some initial photos, I will do a proper detailed post another time :)
