long story short: it is like a regular bridge pickup for a 55-94 from Hanson (they are quadbuckers if you didn't happen to know) and its neck companion, matched and tweaked in output and peak resonance

long story short but a bit longer: a while ago I came up with an idea that, the Lakland Hanson LH-3 pickups being linear humbuckers (bridge pup = two times linear humbucker, i.e four coils), Lakland could go for a neck MM pickup where the coils could be connected diagonally, thus emulating a P-bass pickup architecture (and probably sound). They had that documented and said they might try it in the future. Not yet tho.

Since I am a representative of the minority that can't come to adore ChiSonic pickups, I took them out of my bass, and the pickup rings are just too big for regular singles, so I ordered two switchable humbuckers. BTW you may see what it will look like here:

not bad to me!

In the Decade position too!

Sounds like a killer option to have - P or Bucker sound in the front.

that, or that, or a neck jazz sound. Also, 2 neck jazz pickup placement options, or optional inverted P, or parallel/series whithin one pickup, or parallel/series between the halves of the two pickups, or halves of the 4 linear humbuckers interconnected in any other scheme...

Thought about posting this to "strings", but it's Lakland-specific...so here it goes.

I want to put flats on either my 55-02 or -01. On the -01 I just picked up, I noticed that JoshB put through-bridge strings on. Definite difference in tension between that and the through-bodies on my -02. Which begs the question:
Does through-body matter for, or even adversely affect, playing with flats?

I noticed, for example, that Thomastik-Infields are "lower tension", and La Bella's say "not for through-body". I am wondering if the added tension might even be a detriment. I am surprised/pleased at my -01's B with the through-bridge strings. Still tight.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure there could be a tension difference since the contact with the nut and bridge straddle are unchanged. I haven't noticed and tension change, or tone difference.

Yes, but is that a can of flat worms or round worms? Are they tense worms, or floppy? Do they growl? Do they like carrots? :) Thanks for not flaming me too hard on this one.

I know this is one of the YMWV topics, so I'm going to go for the Thomastiks and see how things roll. They'll get their first live showing at the Link Removed.

He he he! Pressure wounds...really floppy...but the tone is very organic:D

yea, you're not supposed to put flats through the body because it wears down the winding fairly quickly (supposedly, I've never tried it). I think with TIs it wouldn't be a big deal since they're thinner with lighter tension, so the break angle wouldn't really hurt. LaBellas are another story.

Can...open...worms...everywhere. :) It does seem that "not through body" is the prevailing guidance, and since I ended up going with La Bellas, I'll try them out through the bridge.

Now where did I put that bait bucket lid...Oh, here it is! How about the new Skyline AJs? I saw pics on Bass Club Chicago's site.

I am not sure if I would go with trans red or trans charcoal, but the price point is pretty good. They say that they are shipping in October...right around my birthday...hmmmm.

Denchiq, how you make my mind scheme on some possibilities...

Hess, I've had DA Chromes thru body on my 4-94 with no issues before. Of course, if you do decide to do it, make sure you have strings long enough to do it.

And I dig the trans charcoal.... yeah... :)

Worms... I did a true side-by-side comparison of top laid vs. through body. I strung my Classic 4-94 E and D through body and the A and G top loaded. I reversed it on my Deluxe 4-94. Hen reversed 'em again when I restrung them. This eliminated all the generally ignored variables like perceiving differences because our memory of subtle sonic and feel differences is pretty useless.

This way I had the same set of strings (EXACT same set of the same age because they were one set), the same chunk of wood, the same amp settings, etc. This test clearly convinced me that there's simply no difference. Before, I swore there was a distinct yet subtle difference in sound and feel.

There isn't. But, I still string my Lakland basses through body because I can.

Regarding flats- I have a set of Lakland Joe Osborn flats (45 - 105) on my Fender Sting which only allows through-body. No problem Ans they've been on there for about two years. I gad some TI flats on there before that and I only needed to shave a little silk off the E string for them to work.

Just be very careful as you pull them through and tighten them. But given the potential for breaking the windings, and the utter lack if good reason to go through the body, I'd play it safe and go top-load for flats if I have the option.

I can't speak with any certainty on whether or not through-body creates any great sonic differences, BUT I can say with certainty that going through-body eliminated some phantom buzzes I was getting at the bridge on occasion, and the added break angle and extra down tension on the saddles does seem to tighten up the setup and coupling at the bridge. Now, whether that makes any true SONIC difference is highly subjective... I personally feel that the tighter coupling to the bridge at the saddles and at the body does increase the resonance just a hair (2 contact points at the body for the string vs. just the one at the break-angle on the saddle with through-bridge), but YMMV. When using flats I go through-bridge only.

yeah, it sounds complicated, but in reality one can choose a few options he personally wants, and be a happy camper
I reckon that a 5-way switch instead of a conventional 3-way switch more than doubles sound options that a -94/-02 offers, and two separate 3-way switches make it 9 options, I think.
